Their offense is really the only inconsistency. Their defense has ranged from decent to exceptional, so the story is accurate. The offense has ranged from abysmal to pretty good, but that wasn't what the article was about.

They are inconsistent on offense, but not on defense. Martin has said from day one that a solid defense will give you more chances to win games. Look at UK this year - their offense is one of the least productive that I can remember, but their defense is so stout that they don't have to put up 80+ points a game to win. In essence, the better your defense, the easier your job on offense is, because you have to score fewer points to win.

The best UT defense in more than four decades. That's not a small sample size.
Wes, stats are stats unless they are misleading stats. I think our defense is very good but ppg is a terrible metric for defensive stats....and I think you know that.
FG % is the best metric for defensive efficiency. And we're good in that department. Even that stat has some flaws but PPG is beholden to pace of play. We play slow. That's automatically going to hold down our ppg. But FG% is the best metric or stat to show our defense off.
