Notes: Worley makes debut

Justin Worley

Tennessee freshman quarterback Justin Worley (right) hands off to freshman tailback Marlin Lane on Saturday night during the Vols' 37-6 loss to second-ranked Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Freshman Justin Worley opened the year as Tennessee's No. 3 quarterback, but he won't be redshirting after making his debut Saturday night at No. 2 Alabama.

    • In three plays, I thought he accomplished about as much as Simms did in 57 minutes.

    • still not sure why we put him in the game with 3 mins left.... It doesn't help us or accomplish anything.... But i guess none of that matters if he starts next week, which wouldn't surprise me considering the fact Matt Simms is god awful....

    • What planet is Simms on? He seems to still think he is the starter.

If he is all vol, he starts coaching. He can read Ds and set up plays. He has no actual ability to throw though.

    • Well now that the redshirt is off, go ahead and start him the rest of the season. Get him the experience, bench Simms, and let's have a QB competition going forward. The season is shot so Worley should get the experience since we are "so young and building for the future".

    • Simms said he “played pretty well against one of the better defenses in the country,” but he admitted there’s “stuff that we need to get better at.”

    • I am a huge fan of CDD, and believe he is dealing with the decline we've been in since 2001, but what kind of quote is this: For that matter, Dooley said he also wasn’t concerned that Worley no longer will be able to redshirt.

“I’ve never worried about redshirts,” Dooley said. “I don’t care. These guys, they don’t worry about staying for four years anymore, so why should we worry about redshirts? They come out in three (years). When they stop coming out in three, we’ll start redshirting them.”

If I weren't a Vol fan, I'd say it is a coach turning on his team. That's a dangerous generalization of players when applied to a kid who just committed to playing for the Vols for his college career. Completely out of character for Dooley.
      Disappointing.
I am and will continue to be in the corner of our current staff, but that makes me question them. Hope it is isolated.

Speaking the truth. I bet Worley wants to be on the field. Any player worth a crap does.

    • worley gives us our best chance to win going forward. i like the fact that his first possible start comes against his home state school in so.car. the season isnt lost if we can get 3 more wins and go bowling. anything more then that i feel is a plus for us. no lattimore and garcia means a shot at four more wins i feel.

totally agree with you twvol4250 , hope we play the kid early and often cheers +1

    • I second that agreement twvol4250. the only way to get this team the experience they need to compete in the conference is to start the young. It obviously won't be realized in this or next year, but it will pay huge dividends over the long haul.

should be fun to see at this point , really think we have a shot to beat the rest of the teams on our schedule esp if we can get Worley used to our off sets

CDD fan also. I personally believe what he is trying to say is that the team comes first. Players can't leave a program until year three and many great players leave after three years. So why worry about a redshirt when the player is needed now. Redshirt the ones that can't play now.
