On Monday morning, 247Sports pushed through a major update to the network and unveiled an additional system for ranking recruits: the 247Composite.
Safety Kameron Miles of West Mesquite (Texas) High School is the highest-ranked prospect in the new 247Composite among Tennessee's 15 known commitments for the 2013 class.
The 247Composite takes the rankings of industry recruiting sites and runs them through a complex algorithm using a Gaussian distribution formula to create the most comprehensive ranking on the Internet. It converts average industry ranks and ratings into a linear composite index capping at 1.0000, which indicates a consensus No. 1 prospect across all services. The system effectively helps to eliminate any individual biases in the ranking process by forming an “average” of sorts based on numerical data.
It also allows literally thousands of prospects to be ranked, something that sets 247Sports far ahead of any other network covering recruiting.
So how does Tennessee's 2013 recruiting class stack up nationally in the 247Composite?
The Vols check in at No. 25 in the current 247Sports team rankings, which now use the 247Composite to rank classes. Tennessee's class ranks ninth in the SEC, ahead of Missouri, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Arkansas and Kentucky.
Four of UT's 15 known commitments — safety Kameron Miles, wide receiver Camion Patrick, offensive lineman Austin Sanders and defensive lineman Jason Carr — all have four-star ratings in the 247Composite.
Miles is the highest-ranked player as the No. 156 overall prospect and the nation's No. 10 safety in the 2013 class. Patrick, a senior at Lenoir City (Tenn.) High School, is ranked No. 272 nationally, No. 36 among wide receivers and No. 5 in the state of Tennessee. Sanders, an offensive tackle at Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tenn., is ranked the No. 384 overall prospect, No. 36 offensive tackle and No. 7 prospect in the state.
Carr, who's from White Station High School in Memphis, Tenn., is at No. 418 overall, No. 22 among strongside defensive ends and No. 8 in the state of Tennessee.
