Martin: SEC hoops must make changes

Cuonzo Martin

Tennessee basketball coach Cuonzo Martin

Cuonzo Martin thinks SEC basketball is facing a scheduling crisis, and UT's coach didn’t just start thinking that after his Vols again fell on the wrong side of the bubble.

    • Good article Wes. Coach is right and the five teams you mentioned that had abysmal strength of schedules need to pick up the slack.

    • I've always felt that "If you want to be the best play the best" is how you should schedule in any sport. UT has been a school that does that in both basketball and football. However, that does come up and bite you in the rear end sometimes.

Unfortunately teams like Florida and Georgia have not always lived up to that. Georgia has gotten better at least with football.

    • This isnt really that big of a mystery. Look at the teams with the lowest quality schedules..they are some of the worst teams in the SEC. It's no secret why they are scheduling weak non-conference teams - they want to get WINS. These weak teams figure if we can just get a good looking non-conference record, even if it's against the sisters of the poor, then maybe they can squeak out a winning record in the SEC and get in the tournament. Or maybe their primary concern isnt getting in the tournament, its just getting as many wins as possible to please the fans and administration and maybe hold onto their job a little longer..

Look who had the toughest schedule - Florida. Why? Cause they know they have a good team, and they are going to the tournament no matter what. They can AFFORD to schedule a difficult non-confence slate. So, i understand what CM is saying, but you are asking these weaker teams to schedule tougher teams in order to help OTHER SEC teams, not themselves. Sort of self sacrifice to help the league as a whole, and im not sure the other teams in the SEC are that selfless.

    • Wes, how well do some of the fans of these schools support basketball? I know Georgia does not support the basketball team nearly as well as they do the football team. Is that part of the problem? Is their a lack of emphasis on basketball at these schools?

Cuonzo Martin told reporters Monday, March 18, 2013 that the SEC needs to schedule more aggressively for the betterment of the league. This is coming on the heels of only three teams making the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday.

    • I will go ahead say I agree with Martin. And I believe he is calling out Minn. they started strong but the second half of the year could not beat anybody. Andy Kennedy is in his 10th year and has that crappy of a schedule, ridiculous. Barbee at Auburn will be back on Calipari's bench as an assistant come next year.

I just hope nobody tries to go pro. If everybody stays this is a contender for the league and possible top 15 team!

    • I'm thinking the new TV deal is finally going to force the lack-of-effort issue.

Scheduling is one issue. Facilities are another.

Until the last year or two, there were only one or two SEC games on regional TV a week. Nobody much ever saw what kind of dumps places like Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama and Miss State play in. Does Ole Miss really think those porcelain water fountains on the end lines look like bigtime hoops? And when are we going to compel Vanderbilt to build a real arena instead of a four-sided opera house? Their floor looks like nine acres of empty prairie on the tube.

The people who are shelling out big money to buy SEC basketball rights are not going to put up with pisspoor effort from the hind end of the league.

    • UT had a SOS better than any other bubble team yet they still got snubbed..IMO the NCAA tourney selection committee uses whatever logic they see fit (in other words they talk out of both sides of their mouth)..

      jbeare1962

    • I've said for years that it's too arbitrary, especially with committee member turnover in the interest of "fairness." Only solution, IMO, is to go with straight RPI, unless 75% or so (let the conf. commishes decide the exact requirement) of whatever the committee quorum is decides otherwise, in which case they can override. And make them back it up by making all their names and all their votes public. The computer may screw some people, but it will do so impartially, with no bias or media-driven "perception" which overrides reality, and it will be consistent in how it weighs various components of its formula.

Sportswriters sometimes have to say a team, a player, a coach, and/or an administrator sucks, VERY publicly, and then show up and ask them questions the next day. These wussified administrators need to grow a pair and make them thar votes pub-lick. And so should all the votes in any CFB poll used as a component of the BCS, as well as all Heisman votes.

I'm not sure what impact fan attendance has on scheduling, 'cause any SEC program would put a good number in the house for a game against a big-name, ranked opponent. I think recent history kinda proves that.

But aside from a few places, SEC hoops attendance isn't great. But at some places, it's outstanding.

Well, UT placed 3rd in the conference behind UK & Arky in total revenue at 14.4 million. IMO that's impressive for UT to be in the top 3 in both major sports fb&bb..

    • The rest of the SEC should take notes because Martin is telling the truth

      Mike Woodard

    • Chicken? Egg?

Great players want to play in great programs. Great programs play against other great teams. They play in classic match-ups. They become "classic" because they sustain their apprearances in the NCAA tournament. Who wants to go to a school and play against Podunk State's all season, even if you do win 18 games every year but find yourself snubbed from the Dance? FEW.

Martin is right. SEC teams have to schedule more aggressively. That doesn't mean that everyone needs to play the top 5 winningest programs in history every year. It means that every team has to strategically set themselves up to be in the top 150 RPI's. Does that put the pressure on to win? Yes. You have to be able to coach and play. And if you show you can do that, your recruiting will improve. Then the positive momentum takes effect. Or, if you like the wind of winning and recruiting fills your sails.

But you have to set your sails if you want to catch any wind. I like CCM.

Good call..Gophers were 3 and 7 in last ten and made it with a good seed.No way Ole Miss gets 24 wins if they had not padded the schedule with 13 cupcakes in a row..LSU did the same
