  • What exactly is the problem about academics and athletics. What is it that cheek as done. I'm confused.

  • I'll give it a shot to the best of my knowledge:
I think the four biggest things are that everyone else in the SEC pretty much admits anyone who qualifies by SEC and NCAA rules. We don't, and we have additional requirements.

Once they are in school, we have dropped a lot of classes that helped kids stay eligible (i know i enjoyed my Military Science class in the early 80s). Other schools have a lot of these options and supposedly between Cheek and Susan Martin, they've done away with them.

Another issue is how we grade (and Wes, Ryan or Kevin may have a better grasp of this). We supposedly count down when calculating grade point averages, so as an example a C- would count as a D when calculating averages. May have been a factor in Izaeah Lanier's dismissal if I remember
    correctly.

The Thornton Center. It was built with athletic department funds and was run by the athletic department to help student athletes. Cheek/Martin turned it over to be run by the academics and it's not as much of a benefit to athletes anymore. Again, I thik WRK know a lot more about this than I do, maybe they could give more detail or correct me where I'm wrong.

It looks real innocent until you look into what they are really about and what they have done at UT and other schools.

  • The Lanier situation wasn't a GPA thing. Most schools will accept transfer credits if you make a D or C- (or above, obviously).

Lanier took some courses either online or at a community college and needed to transfer the credits in, but he made a C- which UT wouldn't accept, whereas most other programs would have.
