2012 All-SEC Team Recruiting rankings

  • not sure if it's already posted, but i just saw this and thought it was kind of interesting.

    First team All-SEC in 2012 featured some stud players, but how did they stack up in the recruiting rankings out of high school?

    But all of the 3-stars were seniors, other than Johnny Football of course. Several of the 4 & 5-star guys were either sophomores or juniors, and one (Gurley) was a freshman.

    I think a lot of people misinterpret the intent of the ranking system. A player's star rating is more of an idicator of his ability to make an early impact than anything else. It's common to see 3-star players turn out to be All-Conference or All-Americans, but you rarely see a 3-star player make an early impact.

    Yea, I would agree with you mostly. I dont necessarily think that the rating system is an indication of early contribution, but more of a "potential" indication or ceiling indicator. JMO, but I dont really expect too many freshmen, regardless of their ranking, to make an early impact. The transition from H.S, where these kids are normally significantly better than most of the other kids they're playing against, to college (particularly the SEC) where all the kids were probably the best (or one of the best) players on their team is such a big jump that I dont really have too many expectations for early contributions. If they do, that's great, but it's not my expectation.

    I wasn't posting this to say "oh look you don't have to be a 5*" it was more of just a FYI post because i found it interesting. :-D

  • Patterson was the #1 rated JUCO in 2012 so he's a 5 star.

  • All I was saying is that you don't have to be a 5 star to be a great player in this league. Sometimes we get caught up in a guy being higher rated but in reality not every 5 star is a success and not every 3 star is a special teams player. Just look at the spreadsheet that someone put up (sorry I can't remember the name right now) of the top 100 players in 2005-2008 and where they are now. There are several top 25 players who really never played in college....but also several who were 1st round draft picks.
