2012 Football Schedule...2012...not 2011

I bet Dooley is still trying to down-schedule so they haven't released it yet.

Sorry, I know that is a bitter and twisted comment but I really wanted to play UNC this year. Instead, we got Buffalo. Embarrassing.

understand but at the time i am not sure we could have handled a great UNC team with the schedule we have

  • At least we now know one reason the 2012 schedule is on hold. Texas A&M (and possibly team #14) will have to be worked in, so some shuffling to the SEC slate will be required. Even if UT doesn't add A&M, we may have to move some games around, especially if a new East division foe comes aboard. There's a good possibility now we won't know next year's schedule until January or so.

  • I thought about this over the weekend. The future schedules were taken down from the UT Athletic Department website a year ago. Could they have known a year ago that the SEC would be expanding for 2012 and the schedules would have to be changed? I say yes, that this has been in the works for awhile.

The question is - do we give up a Western Conference game for the additional Eastern game or do we give up a non-conference game in order to pick up another conference game?

Short term, probably give up a Western division game so we can fulfill any non-conference contracts, then explore a 9-game conference schedule in the future. This is what the Big Ten did. They don't start a 9-game slate until the middle of this decade.

  • Dropping UNC was the right move. As for expansion did anyone really tho kit hasn't been in the works for a long time? Tamu probably just got impatient with all the longhorn stuff and started moving faster. These deals are long term things. Hasty decisions are not made. Everything is checked rechecked and studies are done to see the impact.

If that is the case I wonder if we lose our permanent West game (Alabama) in favor of just rotating two Western teams? I have a feeling a lot of tradition will be lost with this expansion. As part of the last one we lost our permanent series with Auburn in favor of one with Georgia. I've never liked playing Georgia year-to-year as much as I did Auburn.

  • It's because TN fans have a sense of honor. They don't feel that we should dodge anyone on our schedule. If we had lost the game (I very much think we would have won), then so be, we didn't back-down.
