2013 Schedule - Oregon Game

  • We probably have the most difficult schedule of the upcoming year. We play 5 of the top 10 teams in the country (and 3 of those games are on the road). I have been counting some of these games as "bad" losses already, and had Oregon penciled in as a potential embarrassment....then Chip Kelly moved on. Now what?

I'm not saying that we win that game. I'm not saying that we will make it a nail-biter. I just now don't know what I expect.

Oregon is incredibly fast as a team, and we were not last year. One off-season and recruiting cycle doesn't solve that. I just wonder about how the coaching change may affect them early in the season. I know their coach was their OC, but I think we all know that CK ran the entire show. I'm more curious now about

Does this change anyone else's expectations at all?

    Agent Orange

  • I think that without CK the Oregon team we play will be different. I do not EXPECT us to win at this time. However if spring practice goes well we could have a shot. I only say this because if the D can stay disciplined with the upgrade on speed/technique in the back end we could limit their big play scoring and make it a slugfest. With our O line we have a punchers chance.

  • If we can run the ball and control the clock we have a chance. If we can't keep our defense off the field, we will be routed. I know our offense is suppose to be fast paced, but we might want to slow down a little against the Ducks.

    UTBULL

  • I think we have much more of a chance with CCK gone. The new coach is branded as good but being the HC is different than OC.

  • Question: Did Kelly take any of his Oregon staff with him to the league?

  • What a great opportunity for Butch to set the tone early and let the world know that Tennessee hired the right coach.

  • We will lose and lose badly. As long as you become ok with that notion now, you won't feel so bad when it actually happens.

If we win, then you'll be elated and 100% happier than if you expected us to win. Go Vols!

  • Agent orange, I predict a UT win by 10 pts. Could I be waaay too optimistic? Maybe, but the team that CBj is going to field next year we will not recognize! And what I mean is they're going to be fast, strong, in position, playing passionately! There's going to be a complete different mindset that the only way we know who's who, is by the name on the jersey! Jmo. VFL!!

Agree with this... We will be about 17 point underdogs at best. Our defense isn't all of a sudden going to be running a lot faster than last year. I have nightmares of DeAnothony Thomas already. Colt Lyerla is a freaking stud at TE to...

We need to learn how to set the edge better, yes I'm talking about you Jacques Smith, and not bite on the play action pass. The good thing is we will run a similar offense to Oregon so that won't catch us by surprise or the tempo.

Need Brian Randolph healthy to stop the Big plays, and need McNeil to really improve.

I love your optimism, tyger, I really do; but there is no way that we go into Eugene, Oregon with a first-year head coach and beat a top-5 Oregon team by 10 points. No way. Like Voltender said, we are going to lose to Oregon and lose badly; and the earlier we accept that, the better off we will be. They have an exorbitant amount of team speed (DeAnthony Thomas is already giving me nightmares) and their offense will not change much at all even with the HC change. Will we competitive? Maybe, but I wouldn't count on it. I see this game going similar to how the 2010 game against UO did in Knoxville. (we come out swinging in 1st and 2nd quarters, maybe take an early lead, but attrition and speed doom us in quarters 3 and 4) I just don't see this Tennessee team beating THAT Oregon team. I just don't.

  • I would like to say I am surprised there is a bit of negativity about the game in general, but since we have been so bad for the last few years it is hard not to be. I can't help but think we will win the game as I have my orange colored glasses on. It should be a good one and if there isn't a rain delay I like our chances tennesseekoolaid

Not negativity, just realism. I think most people on this board would be thrilled with a 7 win season next year. It is what it is.

  • IMO it will be closer than what most think it will be right now. Both teams will have new staffs so there will be some uncertainty on both sides. I think it benefits us that it is early in the season, hopefully before Oregon hits their stride and their staff figures everything out. But that can be said about the Vols too.

I still can't believe the large number of fans in our fan base that have no knowledge of the present and demand 10 wins a season. Thank you for your support, hdrizzle.

  • Everyone remembers the breakdown of the Oregon team around bowl season? They said if you stop them from running in the interior the become beatable. That tells me Big Dan mcCullers will be a factor and that we will have a 'punchers' chance as I said previously. Anyone remember Appy state and Michigan? That is why they play the game and why I believe we have a chance.

    jakegovols23928

  • Yes, it's true, Oregon has a new HC..but, umm, so do we.. and an entirely new coaching staff save Jay Graham. and they have top 5 talent. We do not. They have a ton of speed on offense, we have below average speed on defense. We are, also, replacing our starting QB and almost every receiver on offense. I think people need to accept that the game at Oregon is likely not going to be pretty.

Indeed our entire schedule should cause everyone to pump the brakes on next year's expectations... we play 5 of the top 10 teams preseason, 6 in the top 25 (yes, Vandy is ranked preseason in the top 25). We get to 7 wins and we probably have beaten someone that we were an underdog against. Which is why i say again 7-5 would be an accomplishment next year.

Have you forgotten our defense on the edge and lack of speed in the secondary? Oregon won't need the middle. Our problems don't just vanish, and players don't miraculously get faster. You can only hope they don't play out of position.

Big Dan will struggle against Oregon and their up tempo offense. Going to be really hard for him to stay on the field. He does not do well or play as many plays in games like this. His best games are against power/physical teams like Bama, not against the finesse speed teams like Oregon.

  • Maybe it is just me but if you look at our players we are not that bad. The last 2 years the recruiting hasn,t been to bad. I think with these coaches and players we will/may have a good year. It is just time for these sophmore and junior players to step up. Look at what Taxas A&M did last year in the SEC and they were not much better off than we are now. I think we can pull off a 8-4 season but it is going to take a lot of good hard work to do it. Just my 2 cents worth.GBO

  • It takes a lot more to beat Oregon than what I'm about to point out, but at the same time it's a starting point that needs to be acknowledged. Since 2007 Oregon has lost 13 games. Of those 13 games UO has only won the time of possession once. The average TOP for the winning team was 35m, 27s. We're going to have to sustain long drives and be able to finish when we get to their side of the field.
