2013 Tennessee Defense - It's never too early!

  • Well gentlemen, it looks like we're switching back to the 4-3. Here's what I see:

    DE - Smith, Walls, Miller
    DT - Couch, Sentimore, Taylor
    DT - Hood, O'Brien, Saulsberry
    DE - Williams, Lewis
    OLB - Maggit, Reeves-Maybin, Barnes
    MLB - Johnson, Bynum, Harris
    OLB - J King, Fugate, Vereen
    CB - Bonner, Gordon, Thomas
    CB - Coleman, Gray
    FS - Randolph, Orta
    SS - McNeil, Brewer

    McCullers: I think the switch to 4-3 will push him to the NFL.

    O'brien: Not may players contribute at DT in the SEC as a true freshman, so we have no reason to think Danny O'Brien can't be All-SEC caliber like we'd hoped he would be when we signed him. Cincy was one of the many schools to offer him, which means our coaches like him. He should get a good opportunity to play.

    Walls: He's listed at 281, which is about 20 lbs more than the ideal DE in Jancek's defense if Cincy's 2012 depth chart is any indicator. However, I think we need more help at DE than at DT and we have an entire offseason to get guys fit for postion switches.

    OLB: Obviously, I guessed a lot. There's no telling who could end up starting at OLB opposite Maggit. King, JRM, Harris, Fugate, Vereeen.. could be any of those guys.

    CB: We need some help.

  • To your comment about Walls...I understand Jancek's preferences but i think going against enormous SEC offensive linemen versus Big East OL will cause him to want bigger guys than before. That doesnt mean Walls isnt bigger now than he needs to be, but yeah...

  • Could be wrong but I just assumed that JRM was more of a safety than an OLB?

  • I definitely think OLB and CB will be our trouble spots on D. The line and safeties should be solid.

    Maggit should be more than fine at one OLB spot, and I think King can be really good. I'm not sure I see OLB as a short coming.. maybe at depth, but as for starters, I think we are pretty good.

    Agreed on Maggit, but we don't know what we have in King yet. He's a great athlete but spent last year on offense. It doesn't mean he or Fugate can't get the job done just that we can't go into the season assuming that'll be the case.

    Not to be too negative, but I'm also curious whether our front four can generate pressure on the QB. I'm glad to hear CBJ talk about being an aggressive D.

    Moore will be a senior next year. It'll be a competition for that spot, though. Mcneil has to learn to cover, Moore has to learn to tackle :/
