2014 OL situation - 1 step forward, 2 steps back

  • I know this has been discussed before but it really hit home this morning. I'm not 100% on my numbers but it looks like we had 17 OL last season. We just graduated 3 and have 5 more graduating next year plus Tiny likely going pro early. That means we currently have 8 OL either on scholarship or walk-on for the 2014 season provided none of those guys flunk out, quits, gets injured or otherwise renders themselves unable to play. Tell me again what a great recruiting coordinator Dooley was. How could he and Hinshaw and Chaney and Pittman be so asleep at the wheel? This sort of crap is exactly why we take one step forward and two steps back. No wonder CBJ and staff are calling every OL they can.

  • The fact we didn't sign any Olineman in 2012 didn't help matters much at all. Don't know if that was planned or if they just struck out with all there prospects.

  • I think Reeve Kohler and Skipper would have helped tremendously. With the exception of Marcus Jackson, the guys UT has left for 2014 are not SEC caliber starters. I'm glad someone else sees it. The reality of this program for the next two or three years is not looking good.

  • What was it, 15, OLinemen CBJ wanted on the roster? That means getting 4 commits every year. Zero is a long ways away from 4. Lots of work to do but this staff doesn't seem to be afraid of work.

This is the elephant in the room, that no one is talking about. Seriously, it keeps me awake at night.

We are going to have a stud OL next year, but it will be absolutely decimated in 2014. One of Butch's top priorities in 2013 should be to get guys like Crowder, Posey, Kerbyson (is that all we have????) some game experience because they will be thrown in the fire in 2014. Those guys may not have superstar potential like we have now in Tiny and James, but they have the chance to be solid SEC players. And obviously his other priority is to recruit some 2014 linemen who are ready to start on day 1 (whether high school studs or JUCO).

The other elephant in the room is the D-line. After this year, we lose Couch, McCullers, Sentimore, J. Smith, and Miller. The ultimate fates of Omari Phillips and Trent Taylor will be HUGE. Other than O'Brien and Jordan Williams, I'm not sure there is a lot of talent left on the D-line. Maybe they move Latroy Lewis over to DE if the OLB depth is good enough.

The good thing is the coaching staff will be able to sell immediate playing time to all their OL and DL targets so that will help a lot. If they land a couple studs and some JUCOs, and it won't be as bad as it appears now.

I'm a lot more worried about the D line. If Taylor and Phillips are gone, we are in big trouble unless we hit the jackpot with a JUCO or a freshman phenom.

This is a VERY serious issue that seems to be at times swept under the rug. A great offense is only as good as the OL is. We know having a great QB,RB,WR corps is worthless w/o OL doing their jobs. SOOOOO......We need CBJ and staff to swing for the fence this recruiting season both OL and DL. I know they see the urgency and importance of the depth. They may have other things in mind that suit their offense, but this is nothing to ignore. Good post +1 bow

  • There is no doubt that Fooley knew he was getting canned, he just flat stopped trying...good riddance to bad rubbish. Jones has some wok to do but I think he's the man for the job.
