3rd down play calling (or decision making)...

  • Ok, much to my wife's dismay, I watched the game again and for the life of me can't figure out some of our 3rd down play calling. I don't know if it's play calling or decision making by Bray, but 3 and 4 we throw a 30 yarder and had another 3 and short where we do the same thing. But yet 3 and 8 we're throwing a 4 yard In??? Those are huge mistakes and momentum killers in the game and it happened 3 times in the game!

I personally think it's decision making, so it's hard for me to place all the blame on coaching for these loses. Add those with muffed punts, 13 yard punts, dropped interceptions, fumbles, dropped 3rd down passes, missed tackles, and lack of "attack" on the squib kick and I just can't totally put the blame on Dooley. We need one more year of good recruiting, which we're doing, and we're ok. In a world where the SEC has won 6 straight national championships (which didn't happen when Fulmer was on board), time is of the essence and it's tough to swallow, but that's what it is right now.

Last thought, the teams we've lost to this year are 17-1 and all in the top 12 of the BCS. A lot of other schools in the country would have the same record, and maybe not have even been as close to winning those games as we were.

Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

Saturday night I had drank a little more than a fella should and then I got on this Board and hopped on the burn Dooley bus. Two days later and a whole lot better state of mind, I agree with this. I dont think we need to fire DD and I do believe we are improving but I want a key win SO bad. Im tired of wanting to turn the game off at halftime or leave early in the 4th to beat traffic. I want to stay until the lights go out cheering. I fully support this team and I know we didnt get this bad overnight and we wont get great in a flash. Go Vols!

  • I was in the nosebleeds so I'm not sure but the stats say Jonathan Banks smothered Justin Hunter. 2 catches? Bray only had 148 yards passing? Uhhh.. I know MSU has a good secondary and all but good grief that's terrible.

I'm not sure of the exact time of possession, but MSU did a damn good job of keeping Bray off the field (especially in the first half). The poor play of our defense turned out to be the best defense for MSU...

EDIT: Found the TOP stats...., First half - UT 7:16, MSU 22:44. We had a total TOP of just over 23 minutes, with 11 of those in the third quarter. The 40 yard onside kick was a huge play in this game...
