A question for you nuts out there

  • orangetex said...

Reasonable question. I thought 8-4 or 9-3. I also wanted to see improvement. My biggest problem is the regression in the defense, QB, and other areas. I cannot reasonably conclude that the program is moving forward. I looked past too many men on field at LSU, I looked past 2011 blowouts, I looked past awful UK game. I got pumped after NC State game. I tried to look past UF game collapse. I tried to look past fact that we scored 44 points n a SEC game and lost (never thought I would live to see that), but I could not stomach the mistakes in the Miss State game in a must win game. This made me re-evaluate all the previous things I tried to ignore. The trajectory is not currently heading north. Thus, I ask myself does CDD have demonstrated track record in turning around a program? And I concluded that I could no longer ignore the blinking lights on the dashboard. We need a change. The Alabama game bothered me but I expected the thrashing. It was just a reminder of how far back we still are.......

    My two cents...

I agree with the change in DCs and the base defense some struggling was expected but we didn't anticipate it would expose some of our weaknesses. On the QB, I'm not the least bit surprised. The kid has a tremendous amount of physical ability. His above the shoulders qualities have really hurt him and the team.

+1 to you 'orange. One of the main reasons I can maintain my optimism is the improved play in the "trenches". Add in the fact that for the first time in years, linemen on both sides of the ball are now being redshirted. That was a common practice back in the 90's . . .

I think Dave Hart prolly knew this too...., as well as CDD when they developed the plan. I think we need a little more depth and experience on defense to pull it off, if given the opportunity. twocents

  • This is a good thread guys. I believe that next year could be a lot better for these reasons bray hunter cp are more than likely gone. Before u blast me hear me out. I think the coaching staff went into the season with the mindset that maybe our defense is gonna be lacking to some degree but hey we got the best passing attack in college football. Let's do what we can and score a lot of points. Whereas next year we would have to commit to strong d and really push the running game. I think this could really change things next year if dooley is still here. Jmo

Is that really you hack? Seriously, great post! +1. You have made an interesting and excellent point. Now that you have pointed it out, Coach Dooley, justifiably so, probably thought he could outscore some of the big fish with Bray/Rogers/CP/Hunter and a more experienced and improved OLine. That goes a long way in explaining the gamble on switching to the 3-4 and the lack of personnel and growing pains that come with the change. VERY INTERESTING! Wish I could give you a +100!

Yea man its all me. I have thought about this several times this year. Kinda like 98 manning gone sky falling and we win a nat chmp cause we stressed fundametal football because we had to and the coaches knew it going into the season. Tee was serviceable ya know kinda like worley or peterman. Anyway thanks for the plus 1

Can't blast that post, hack. + 1 The defenses of the top SEC programs have proven the theory wrong though, if that was infact the theory going into this season. We had to improve the line of scrimmage to compete, which we've done and continue to do. Next step is to improve the defense, which we obviously have not done.

I think it will get better though, with experience, depth, and talent (Randolph, Miles, Harris, Bynum, Lewis, and some fast young corners that grow-up).

I apologize for actin like a 13 year old in reaction to any of your posts the other night. peace

Agreed. although i think the OP could have done without calling people "nuts" and "I could care less what people with your reasoning abilities think about me" comment. I wonder if a poster who thinks we need a coaching change called the pro-Dooley group "nuts" and that they have "no reasoning abilities" would be greeted with such a civilized conversation. I would hope so. but i'm not sure.

  • I think most were saying 7-8 wins on the regular season. But deep down, I confess that I was secretly lusting for 14-0 national championship Pastor!

Was 7-5 a reasonable expectation? Yeah, it looks like it's going to be accurate. But let me ask this: what do you WANT the expectations to be? Do you want to go in to every season with 7-5 being the expecation? 7-5 is in the bottom half of the SEC. We are losing the games we are "supposed to lose", but do you want the expectation to be that we're "supposed to lose" against UA, UGA, UF, USC every season? I sure don't.

Just because we except 7-5 this year does NOT mean we accept it forever. But you have to crawl before you walk.
We are re-building...that means we aren't magically going from 5-7 to 9-3 (or 10-2)! Especially in the SEC.

  • I was hopeful yet guarded before this season (been burned too many times), so I didn't even try and project our win total. At the beginning of the season, I was in favor of Dooley getting 2 more years, due to the massive dumpster fire that he took over.

However, I've changed camps. I think he is our Mike Shula. I think he did a great job stabilizing the program, helping us get back onto our feet, but I feel like we've maxed out what we can achieve (Hello Peter Principle!).

Are we a better team than we were last year, yes. Are we playing better, yes. Are we a well coached team, absolutely not!!! Well coached teams learn from their mistakes, they do the little things right, they play all 4 quarters. We do none of those things. Teams can be flat coming into a game or out after half time, but the fact that we are consistently at a lower energy level than our opponents is on the coaching staff.

I wish Dooley the best, thank him for what he's done, but this season has moved me to the position that he has reached his ceiling at Tennessee.

    5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.

I call them the way I see it. Feel free to call me a nut when you fell you need to. I do things five or six times a day that would earn being called a nut.
I may have been a little strong on the I could care less......stuff. I got a little fired up, my bad.
