ACC Conference Status

  • Read an interesting article about several teams in the ACC being contacted since Maryland left for the Big 10. Mentions NC State and Va Tech to SEC, which would make sense. 2 news teams in the east would move Mizzou and A&M to the west. Curious as to your thoughts.

  • Only a matter of time. FSU to the Big12 may happen this offseason. They didn't sign the exit fee proposal of 50 million. Clemson will be the other team to leave to, probably also to the Big12...

Va Tech and NC State are 2 TV markets the SEC doesn't have, Roanoke and Raleigh. SEC New TV deal starts 2014, I think the SEC will have 16 teams by than.

Super Conferences, Mean Bigger Playoff, something I hope happens.

Maryland didn't sign onto the 50M buyout fee either, but they still have to pay it when they make the move. That being said, both VA Tech and NC State were mentioned as possible expansion candidates last time around, and adding them wouldn't step on the toes of any current SEC member (unlike adding either FSU or Clemson would).

Is that $50 Mill set in stone or is it still pending?

Based on the article I read when Maryland's exit from the ACC was announced, it's already set in stone...

  • One possible advantage of VT/NC State coming to the SEC: That idea of having UT and VA Tech play at Bristol Motor Speedway could gain traction if the schools have to play each other in conference play each season...

NC State will bring in TV Markets in Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and Charlotte. VA Tech TV Market goes well into the metro DC area. Lots of VA Teach Alum and fans in the DC Metro Area. This would give SEC much more clout to name their $ for ESPN to run the SEC network.

  • I would hate to see NcState and VT in the SEC. The worst two possible teams for UT. When it rains it pours. Really hurts our recruiting more than any other SEC team.

If the SEC went after Virginia Tech they would be targeting the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake) and the DC area. Roanoke isn't a huge tv market, the DC area and the Tidewater area are the largest tv markets around Virginia by far.

Gotcha. Conference Realignment is just so interesting to me for some reason. Very interested to see how things play out. ACC is going to strictly be a basketball conference in 2 years.

Actually, it would be even bigger than that. There's a LOT of fan/team crossover in the DC area (Baltimore, DC, NoVA/Tidewater), so the SEC's reach would extend beyond the geographical boundaries. Also, the eastern corner of West Virginia tends to lean towards VaTech as well, so that gives you inroads into WVU territory as well.
