Aggressive Sunseri a player pleaser

Sal Sunseri was hired by head coach Derek Dooley to bring a more aggressive approach to Tennessee's defense. The new coordinator isn't letting anyone down in that department.

  • This is the kind of defense I'm talking about. An attacking defense will keep the opposing offenses off balance. Let the offense make the adjustment to the defense rather than the offense taking the fight to the defense.

  • no matter the results on the field or the growing pains that we may suffer while making the switch, i love that the players seem to be excited about the new system and sound more confident than our D has in years!flex

  • Hood just got me fired up!

  • Oh yeah, how good does this story make you feel? I can't wait to see how explosive this defense is going to be.

  • A. This article get's me fired up, you have to like a mentality that says we can beat you on O or on D.
    B. At first I was a little concerned because if our Offense meets expectations, a bend but don't break Wilcox type D might be a nice complement. Then I remembered all the time killing drives that kept our O off the fiend and our inability to impact the game on D last year, this is going to be much better.

  • Damn I am fired up!

    dogg

  • I love the mentality. No more 3rd and Chavis/3rd and Wilcox type stuff.... I like the aggressive talk. It may not always look pretty this year, but I really do think the defense is going to cause some turn overs this year to help keep or change the momentum in some games in favor of the Vols...

  • This is the kind of D that makes the noise level of the fans a factor, too. It was hard to get fired up and stay that way with the bend dont break stuff. You've got to use 100,000 bloodthirsty, drunk folks the best you can, in my book. This is the kind of D that will feed the crowd, and thus the crowd will feed the D. It's a thing of beauty, really. That Florida game is going to be the loudest Neyland's been in a long time. Dare I say it's gonna be like the good ole days? Go Big Orange.

hadn't really thought of that perspective, but i like where you're going with this postthumbsup

  • I would rather watch an aggressive D make mistakes than the bend but don't break crap. Agg D s get the ball back faster.....one way or the other.

  • I am afraid to get all hyped relative to this defense. There are possible personnell issues or lack of personnell at the LB and CB positions especially in the 2nd tier group that good opposing coaching may take advantage of. I am hopeful we can escape the dome with a win, learn a lot about the team on both sides of the ball and go into the FL game with a better understanding of where this team stands. I am trying to control my hype due to the hype that was felt for a sure win in the dome with the Clemson Bowl team. That was supposed to be a sure win and we all know that one came out.

  • I re-read the article just before I'm heading to bed. Just praying for a dream featuring this defense...what a way to wake up in the morning. :)

  • Shamefully, I cannot remember the list of DCs we have had. I do remember the attacking defenses we had in the 80s and the DLines of the 90s that produced sacks. We had Andre Lott with 8 INTs in his senior year and Eric Berry as a superstar. Did our talent fall off that much or did we have a big change in defensive philosophy over the years that lead to fewer "negative plays" forced by our D? I know a player like EB comes along once in a decade, but I remember being in the Superdome on January 1, 1986 when we had 8 sacks against Vinny Who. I remember keeping Auburn to negative offense in the first half in 1989? 19990? We had smothering defenses that the SEC feared.

I hope we can return to the days of defense being the game changers.

    less than 9 days.
