Am I the Last Dooley Supporter..?

  • Im sure ill get some down votes for this, or worse, but i still support Coach Dooley and hope he gets another year. I am as frustrated and disappointed as anyone about the way this season has gone, and there are times where the decisions he makes drive me crazy (see e.g. the last drive before OT yesterday..), but I like Coach Dooley, I think he is a good man, and I think he has the capability of being a good coach in the SEC. I base this on the glimpses of great play that I see in his team. We have been in every single game save Bama and if the ball would just occasionally bounce our way once in a while, we wouldnt be talking about a new coach right now. The offense is historically good, really unlike any offense I have seen at UT, and Dooley deserves credit for that. The running game is dramatically better than last year, the offensive line play is stellar, and the receiver and TE play speaks for itself. And the D can make plays, the players are often in position to make plays but, for whatever reason, dont. Look at Justin Coleman yesterday getting turned around on the long pass play he got burned on in the 2nd half. He is there, in position, but doesnt make the play. Jaron Toney has an INT gift wrapped for him because he is where he needs to be, in position to make a big play, but doesnt. And the list goes on. All you can ask of the coaches is to put the players in position to make plays, and i think, for the most part, the coaching staff does that.

I have certainly had my gripes about Coach Dooley, and the way the games have gone, but i do not see a regime change as the answer at this time. I am weary of the lack of consistency in our program and dont want to be set back another 2-3 years by losing another head coach. I realize i am in the minority. Heck, i might be the only one left on this sinking ship now, but it makes me extremely sad to think we are staring at yet another coaching search and all the uncertainty and upset which will necessarily ensue. And all for what or who?

  • Dooley has turned Tennessee into Vandy or Kentucky in the SEC. He can't coach. The only reason he has as many wins as he does now is because he was left with one of the most talented qbs ever to see the field at Tennessee. Think about how good CP and Bray are... and think about how badly coached this team is. You had a once a decade player... And you're 4-6...

  • I get your point. We may have to face the fact that we're in the 4th year of a 10-year rebuilding process. Problem is, we can all see the problems right now, but no one knows if the next coach will have any more success than CDD or if CDD is right on the edge of being successful. If you make a change now, you will never know. If you give him an extra year and it doesn't get better, you have just delayed the recovery by a year or maybe more.

I would have to say before the season, I was optimistic that things were trending in the right direction. Now I'm not so sure. I think we are on our way to another 5-7 season with better talent than we had last year.

    It's a gamble either way.

  • There's probably a lot of Dooley supporters...as long as he's coaching somewhere besides Tennessee.

  • I wanted to see him get another year until he decided to run out the clock in the 4th quarter. People make mistakes, but that moment was NOT the time to do it. I was able to hold off the "he's in over his head" speculations until then. That was just a too-glaring proof that he probably doesn't have the guts needed to succeed at TN. Unfortunately being capable (I agree that he is) isn't useful now. This would have been a job to take after more than only 3 years of experience as a HC; he's still learning and that doesn't fly in competition like this. But then there's the "what-if's". What if he's given another year and makes a complete turn around and they finally "turn the corner"? What if they fire him and hire another coach who despite their best efforts can't turn around the program quickly enough for the fans' liking and we once again enter the cycle of calling for a coach's head and are where we are right now three years from now? One wrong move and Tennessee gets stuck in this pit for years. I don't see him surviving to next year though.

That said, does anyone have a Volquest subscription? Supposedly they're (Brent Hubbs?) reporting he's already been fired and is done after Kentucky. Is there any truth to this?

  • I have also been a Dooley supporter. I believe he has done a great job of improving the roster, character, discipline of the team. I thought he would be able to master the details of the job because of his background. I thought so many times he was the most unlucky person in the world. I have come to realize that you make your own luck by being over prepared for every likely senario. We lose a reciever in the end zone on fourth and 12 which would have been a win. His teams are not unlucky, they are unprepared. History will prove that he began a good work to improve this program. The talent level is very comparable to the top SEC teams. The loss of Wilcox and Sirmon were the undoing of this program. These defensive players are the same players who finished 28th in defense last year. Sorry it has come to this. Time for a change.

Give Wes some time. If there's anything real to report, Wes will.

I know someone that does and he said they're reporting that Dooley won't return but will coach through KY. He said they haven't decided whether to announce on Monday or after the KY game.

  • Thanks for the replies. But how reliable is Volquest? I know it's pretty much inevitable, but like rockytopATL, I'm waiting for Wes to say it before I fully believe it. I think Wes did say that it's not a matter of "if" but "when" now though.

Volquest is as reliable as they come but they are reporting the same thing Wes is saying, Not if but when itt is done is the the only question.

  • 4-18 in the SEC! Good guys don't always make good coaches. He's had enough time to just show some improvement, I was and have been in his corner for most of his time here but after this weekend he has completely lost me. As far as his team showing flashes of a good team, every bad team can show flashes just ask Florida. He has now lost 99.9% of the fan base so it's time for him to go. I also think Dave Hart knows the next football coach has to be the right and therefor if you make the right hire you will not be set back 3yrs. Actually make the right hire and you will improve immediately and not regress at all. Realistically any new coach big name or not should not set us back anyway, Dooleys not exactly knocking it out of the park in recruiting. Only 2 4star recruits and the rest are 3stars and less. You should be able to get those recruits on the Universities name alone and then our facilities should also help IMO. I hate to say it but DOOLEY MUST GO!
