An Appeal to 247 Users

  • A few months ago I joined over here after years on another site because all the juvenile banter, name calling, and lack of involvement/information by the mods was all just too frustrating.

The board over here was like a breath of fresh air with posters genuinely respectful of each other and mods who were directly involved in the conversation.

However, the lack of discussion and infrequent posting at the time had me rejoin the other site at least through NSD. BUT after experiencing the same things as previously I am ready to exclusively stay on 247.

So my appeal is this- if you are an infrequent poster who normally just sits back and watches, please join in the conversation!! People will not attack you here and we'd love to hear what you have to say!

There has been more discussion recently but it would be great to see that continue, particularly leading up to the spring. I'd love to see a lot more discussion on this team and our new coaching staff. I am really excited and think Jones may even surprise some people, including us Vol fans, on the field this season.

Thanks Wes, Ryan, and Kevin for your involvement and for helping make this a great place to talk UT athletics.

    GBO!!

I agree. I have no interest to discuss those things as well. But it would be nice to see more discussion about UT athletics.

  • Thanks for posting this thread MississipVol. I love the Vols and love this site. I 've been a season ticket holder since '83 and saw my first Vol football game with my dad in '65. So I'm an old timer who is not very technology oriented, although I've learned to navigate this site to keep up with the Vols. I really didn't think I would join when I registered for the free subscription trial. I found out that I couldn't live without 247. Kevin, Ryan and Wes are quickly becoming part of my Vols family.

I can handle and even appreciate the occasional criticism of our institution, athletic teams, and their coaches and players. Those of us who love the Vols always want what's best for the Big Orange. Accountability of the trustees and participants of our beloved teams should always be on the table for discussion. I enjoy and welcome those opinions especially when they appear to be substantiated by reason and not emotional discharge after the most recent defeat or unsatisfactory ranking.

I am really excited about the direction of our program. I believe the pendulum has started it's upswing. This signing class was selective and further stabilizes what was in free fall mode after the snake went California dreaming on us. I'm counting down the days to attend my first O & W in many years. I believe in BuTch. GBO!! vols

  • my only caveat to the OP would be - let people voice their opinions, even if they dont agree with yours, or even if you view them as critical.. We have extremely passionate fans who have various ways of expressing that passion. Obviously, name calling and insults are unacceptable, but some times you can get shouted down on this board for having a contrary view and i think we all lose in that situation.

  • Completely agree +1!

  • Right now is one of those times, OP. I need more posting.

Love this place, but I do hope the posting volume goes up.

I up voted your comment because I agree 100%. I think down voting someone just because you disagree is not how those should be used but rather for trolling or for those that are especially negative without saying why.

I actually think the divergence of opinions makes things much more interesting, particularly when there's more people expressing them. Asking as we are all respectful and don't get into the juvenile behavior like tos.

Been a Vol Fan for 60 plus years . Only a member of this board for 2 months . Due to 20/200 vision not able to post much. Approaching 70 years old ,and will have to say this is the best group of mods and posters bar none . You folks give me much pleasure and info concerning our beloved vols. As a Navy Destroyer vet, my Captain always said during a bad storm at sea. WE WILL WEATHER THIS STORM TOGETHER and i firmly beleive we have done that with our new coach Butch Jones This does not mean there won't be some big waves now and then but we WILL BE OK!

Frosty, I think you like to play devil's advocate sometimes just so the conversation can get a bit spicy at times. I would put Denvervol in that same boat. I used to get my feathers ruffled by things the two of you would post. Once I realized that you both are vol to the core and simply look at things from every perspective and really want to explore an outside perspective and not just go with the flow, I began enjoying your posts and appreciating your views instead of feeling like you were attacking.

I honestly enjoy reading your posts now as well as Denver's and even went so far as to PM the mod's for Denver when we thought he was kicked off the board for the Vandy stuff. I guess I say all of this as a very long way of saying I agree with you and that we all should be more open minded especially when the content of the post is not in alignment with our own thoughts.

We are all very passionate about our Vols and simply want them to win at everything.

I appreciate everyone on here and hope that our boys get back to their old ways of winning and once again being a top 10 ranked team.

oh! and I love me some Black Ops I & II as well!

i appreciate that Tiny..i can honestly say, though, i dont post to stir the pot. If anything, especially lately, i have tried as much as possible to take a bit of the edge off. I know we all want the same thing and we are all pulling on the same rope in the same direction. Even guys like GoVols2011 and OMGJG. It makes me sad to see posters like that get shouted down.

I think, unless you are posting absolute fabrications, or are hurling personal attacks, we should all be tolerant. That doesnt mean we should never disagree with each other, it just means if you do disagree, lets have a critical, rational discussion. We are family..an awfully BIG family, albeit, but family nonetheless. And, like family, sometimes we squabble and bicker, but we share a common bond, and sometimes that gets lost. I dont want to overgeneralize, but i think there are some posters who take any sort of criticism of the staff, the school, or the players as an indication of disloyalty. There is a "blind allegiance" mentality that i think can be as destructive, if not more, than the raging flamers on the board. And i would hate to see this board lose the diversity of opinion that i come here for.

    +1 again for the rational.

However I do want to make one thing absolutely clear. There is a very big difference between having a discussion and always having a negative tone.

Allow me to provide an example.

This is how a thread about our current basketball team SHOULD go:
    - This team is pretty crappy. How much of that poor play should fall on Coach Martin? I for one believe that he isn't doing a good enough job. I think it might be time for a change. (i dont believe that, but follow along)
    - I disagree, they have had some bad breaks and with Maymon being out, they just aren't able to finish the way we are used to seeing them finish games. With a legit PG and Maymon back, this team will look a lot better.

See that was civil, and ideal.

Here is how "discussions" CURRENTLY go, many times from GV2011 and OMGJG:
    - "Coach Martin is a heap of garbage and needs to be fired immediately. He can't coach worth a lick and I can't believe anyone would ever defend him. If you think this is bad luck you are stupid"

See how much different that is? But see, thats why "shoutdowns" happen. because of posts that start in a confrontational manner. and look, tone is difficult to ascertain on a message board, but it's not impossible.

If you walk up to a group with your hands up looking for a fight, you're gonna get one. That's a simple fact of life. We are all willing to have an open discussion and listen to what everyone has to say. But if you come in swinging you're gonna get down voted.

Does that make sense? Cause look, I totally respect the other side of every discussion and i respect what you post Frosty. It adds to the board and grounds those of us that always see the silver lining. But shortsightedness and negative tone have cost some posters the respect of the board.
