Analyst weighs in on Foreman

  • Really excited reading this. He does have a good chance to play early just due to the speed he has. Like the way the staff is recruiting.

  • govolsgo8586, AMEN brother! +1 A kid that is Tennessee to the core can make up for in effort and heart what he may lack in "star ratings." With guys like Foreman, we will be the most determined, motivated team in football.

I just like the fact CBJ and Co. is going after TN kids that have passion about UT football. That is what our program has lacked for years. Get a bunch of kids on the team that have always eat, breathed, and slept UT football and watch what happens on that field every single down.

Couldn't have said it better! +1

  • Can't wait to see some SPEED in our secondary! Eric Berry was the last DB we had capable of breaking 11 seconds in a 100m dash. Not saying this kid will compare, but at the very least we'll have true SEC speed. Truly a breath of fresh air! BTW first post!!!

Err, Knoxville is in middle East Tennessee. Still in the area of course, though.

  • Thanks, I was unaware Gray had that kind of speed. What has come of him? Can you foresee Gray and Foreman on the field together next year?

I believe they did a 1st year recap on him... if you find any of the 1st year recaps, they have links to all of them at the bottom of the story.

Said it before and ill say it again, it's great to get in-state kids, but this idea that what has held our program back is the lack of "passion" by our recruits because they didnt grow up in Tennessee is just misguided bordering on delusional. Playing for your home state school does NOT convert a two star athlete into a five star player. i know it would be great if that were true, but it's simply fantasy. Does anyone really believe that if we signed a class full of 2-3 star kids from Tennessee that we could compete for SEC champioinships?

There is a reason we are at the bottom of the SEC - we are not getting the 4-5 star kids that Alabama, Georgia, LSU, UF, SC are getting. Look at the recruiting rankings in the SEC for the last 5 years and you will see that signing the best players, no matter where they are from, usually means you have the best team. Sure, anecdotally, a low rated player will turn out to be great, and a high rated player will be a bust, but these are exceptions to the general rule that the teams that recruit the best will be the best teams.

So, while we can all cheer for the commitments of guys like Foreman and Swafford, at the end of the day, we are still outside the top 40 in recruiting rankings currently and next to last in the SEC, and we need that to change in the next month.

  • Not to be a downer but ESPN tests Foreman as a 4.52 40 yd guy.
Still not shabby at all....most times are never right especially
    from the individual ath/coach.

While I agree whole heartedly about getting higher ranked players I would urge you to actually look at the numbers for each of those programs you mentioned, most of them average at least 10 or more 3 star players in their recruiting numbers also, including the mighty AL. If you look at the way players are evaluated a 3 star player is considered a Div I prospect that likely needs a red-shirt year or two to develop. 4 and 5 star players are usually those that figure to make an immediate impact. TN's roster has numerous 3-4 star players that have been in the program for a couple years and this should carry TN next year. Additionally TN is the mix for at least 3 5 star players that I know of and several 4 star players. Lets give the coaches that have been on staff all of about 3 weeks a chance to close out the recruiting class.....

And let me clarify that I am not making excuses for the staff and not stating that they will be successful but the previous staff did a lot of damage with 3 consecutive losing seasons. Additionally prior to Jones's signing TN only had 2 4 star players committed and both are still committed though its possible one will be lost... TN will sign likely 27 players according to the article and if that happens it will be a top 25 class, if they get 1-3 of those 5 star players it will be even higher. All I saying is that every class will have 10-15 3 star players..........

Man...alot of truth here too.....Everyone seems to be making valid points. I must say Doc....this has been my point since the coaching change took place. Everyone "ragging" on the hire etc...etc....I think we will come out with a strong recruiting class. We all have to remember this. Every Dooley recruit is not always gonna be a fit for CBJ system. They will be focusing on putting the right players in place for the system they run. An athlete is an athlete...BUT....they aren't all created equal in their individual strong points. Some just aren't able to adapt well to a different style system, and the 5 star ranking drops to a low 3 to high 2 if they can't make the transition. Flip side of this is....It is not uncommon for a strong 3 star, low 4 star to exceed the other comparable 5 stars because they are incredibly efficient using their ability to adapt well.....Not a rule of thumbs, but very common none the less.

Can we please lay off the cute aliases for Dooley? The guy did his best, taking the job when almost nobody wanted it. History will show he did a helluva lot to improve our roster and get us back in the hunt.

Nobody likes the Phat Phil jokes, and Dooley deserves the same amount of respect.

First, I'm not counting this class as done yet, my comment was only directed as to where we are currently as is evidenced by the last sentence of my post. Second, yes, truly, most top classes have lots of three star players, but what separates us from the Alabama's of the world, and what USED to separate us from the likes of Vandy and Miss. St., are the number of elite 4-5 star players we were able to sign. No team is going to compete for SEC championships signing a class full of 2-3 star players. the Big East, maybe, but not in the SEC, where typically half of the top 20 recruiting rankings each year are SEC teams. Just signing a top 20 class means you are staying LEVEL with the competition. Thus, my point was only this - we need to start getting commits from the elite players or this class will be one of the worst in the SEC, and one of the worst we have signed in a while. And with us likely losing Hunter, Bray, CP, Rivera, Rogers, that's not going to carry us through to our next class. We need impact players and we need them now.

As for the predicament of CBJ, you are right, it's a tough gig. But that's why he's getting paid 3 mil a year. You shouldnt get 3 mil a year unless you can produce results, irrespective of the ready made excuses. And he has plenty of excuses for not succeeding. So we can all rest easy knowing that if we are crap for the next several years, at least we have a good EXCUSE for it.

5'10 - 164 pds and runs a 4.52 according to espn.. And the only offers he had from SEC schools were Vandy and Kentucky. Scout rates him as a two star. I will say again, happy to have anyone who wants to wear the orange, but, at some point folks, we have to start getting commits from some elite players. If you want to get depressed, just run down the commitments of UF, Alabama, Georgia, and LSU..all of whom have over a dozen 4-5 star commitments. That's who we are competing against. And before you start typing, yes, I am aware of our circumstance versus theirs, but excuses dont win football games. We are only going to get further behind in the talent race if we dont close strong in the next month.

Patrick Willis was a 2 Star coming out of high school and Tennessee didn't want him....how many years inn a row has he been in the Pro Bowl now???

Don't know who rated Willis two stars. Rivals had Willis as a three star. The point is still a good one, but inaccuracy, if this is, can weaken good points.

Easy.....Everyone has their own take on things.....No one said he did not try his best or do alot for the school, or that we had more to choose from. I call him "Stooley" because he was arrogant, and very bad at keeping fanbase in the loop. When he did, he skated around alot of the issues. Also due to the way he handled legacy players etc... I actually liked alot about him, and supported him thru his tenure here. His ramrodding the new facilities etc... was a huge accomplishment. Was he a bad hire???? Stats say yes! Reality says no. Just wasn't able to make things happen. Stooley is a reference to a stool pigeon. Sorry that bothers you. On the Fulmer issue...He should have stayed as coach and should have been given another year or two to get things back on track. If that had happened, we wouldn't have went thru the Lame Kiffin ordeal, and would not had to settle for Dooley. Hamilton had it out for him I think....We have been fortunate to have 3 of the best coaches in NCAAF history, Neyland, Majors, and Fulmer. My take anyway...I have utmost respect for Fulmer...and always will. Dooley....doesn't deserve to be in that group. IMHO

Hate him all you want in your heart. But we have higher standards on this board. Keep it up and risk VIP threads left and right that you will be unable to read.
