BIG PICTURE: Monday thought to munch on...

  • Y'all longtime members (and Twitter followers) know that I'm nothing if not honest — sometimes too honest — all the time.

With that said, I want to mention three things.

    ---------------

    1) I've never been more convinced than I am right now that this site is going to eventually become the top site in the Tennessee market and one of the top sites in the entire 247Sports network. The numbers and trends don't lie.

    2) We've beaten every reasonable growth projection to this point, and far exceeded it at times. We always want more, and we'll always want more, but there's nothing wrong with sitting back occasionally and saying, "We've done some good stuff here."

    3) The biggest thing still keeping us from becoming the UT market leader is the relative lack of activity on the board some days.

    ---------------

We have the most polite UT fan board on Planet Earth, but our number of posts needs to catch up to our number of subscribers. We can have all the news and all the features and all the bells and whistles in the world, but this site will only ever be as good as the community on the board.

Our community is awesome. Our community is growing faster than we ever imagined. But our community needs to become more active. All those things are true.

Never be afraid to post on the board. Never be afraid to ask us a question and make us do our jobs. Never be afraid to disagree with someone — as long as you debate the post and not the poster. Never be afraid to get your money's worth. Never be afraid to spread the word about this site and remind people that this is a free or pay board, and that there's plenty of room for both groups of people.

We love y'all. We wouldn't be here without y'all. But we need more from y'all. And I'm not too proud to ask for that.

Try to fit somewhere in between Wes from 6-8 a.m. (a "0") and relentless posting tour de force AKA shoeless (a "10").

In closing ... if you won't listen to me, please for the love or Everything Holy listen to my old friend, General George S. Patton. Old Blood and Guts tells it like it is. And you will listen to him. And you will like it.

Can't blame you there. Those people just want their 10 seconds of internet glory by being the first to put that info on another board.

  • Wes,

I've got a question for ya. How difficult is it to build relationships with coaches and players and then have to report negative or bad information about them? Is it common for coaches to give you interviews/information and then use that against you in an attempt to keep you from publishing negative info? Thanks.

    Jetervol

  • When I first started on the board all I did was read the stories and try to learn from the rest of the members. After a while I would post here and there. I am now starting to post on more topics to be active on the board. You have my support I will do the best I can to chime in when possible.

Same here...... I usually just read and keep up with the goings on and hardly ever post but will make a greater effort going forward.

  • I didn't like Wes when I first start seeing all of his God bless-Ed tweets on the front page of govolsxtra.

Now I still don't like him but I do enjoy reading everyone's work.

Ok, outside of Wes denying he's a Vol fan (LIAR) and the fact that he's a Cub fan (technically only because he was born into it), I like Wes.

Great question. There's no guidebook for those inevitable situations. Every situation must be handled in its own way, depending on the reporter and the source in question.

I try my best to cultivate sources who are also good people who generally do the right thing off the field, but that's not always possible in this business.

At the end of the day, have I written some things that temporarily or (in rare cases) forever shut off a source? Yes. But it's unavoidable. You can say it's not personal — and to me it usually isn't — but it's very personal for some of our sources, and it should be in some cases. This is their livelihood we're talking about here. But it's also my livelihood, so I can't let myself be compromised.

You'd be surprised how often people try to do things to keep you away from a story, but I can't and won't overlook serious issues for any reason.

If you're very up front with people from the beginning and remain consistent, they usually respect you and don't try to intimidate you. Coaches and players will usually test you the first chance they get, but unless you're my boss, yelling at me doesn't usually get you anywhere. And I fight back. That's helped me much more than it's hurt me in this business. Coaches, players and administrators usually respect someone they know they can't intimidate.

  • Since I don't want to rue, I'll post something.

I'll pivot off of Jetervol's question.

    Wes,

Since you seem to build solid relationships with coaches, staff and players, I am sure you hear a lot of stuff on background that doesn't make the articles. Stories of kids getting paid, secondary violations, etc. (not necessarily at UT, just in general)

How do you differentiate between newsworthy stuff and not? And do you keep stuff under wraps because even though it will be news it could hurt your long-term relationship with the source? Just seeing how you parse through those obstacles.

Not looking for any gossip. I just know that if I were in your shoes, I'd have a hard time with that battle.

If I can prove it, I write it. At least 99.9 percent of the time. There better be a good reason why not.
