BREAKING (Jan. 6): Jeronne Maymon to redshirt

  • Here's the press release from UT:

    MAYMON TO REDSHIRT

Tennessee basketball coach Cuonzo Martin announced Sunday that forward Jeronne Maymon will redshirt the 2012-13 season.

Maymon, who has yet to practice with the Volunteers this season due to a left knee injury, plans to return to action next season as a fifth-year senior.

A native of Madison, Wis., Maymon enjoyed a breakout campaign for the Volunteers last year, earning second-team All-SEC honors. He averaged 12.7 points and a team-best 8.1 rebounds while shooting .558 from the field. In SEC play, he led the team in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage and steals. He also recorded nine double-doubles on the year and led Tennessee with 18 charges drawn.

"It's really tough to know that I can't be on the court with my teammates this season," Maymon said. "But I have confidence in them, just like I have confidence in these coaches and our medical staff. I know this is in my best interest, and I am going to work incredibly hard to come back as an even better player and teammate next season. I love Tennessee.

"I believe everything happens for a reason, and I see this injury as a blessing in disguise. God does not make mistakes."

Martin will be available for comment during his weekly media luncheon Monday at noon ET. Video of his luncheon comments will be posted on UTsports.com Monday afternoon.

  • This is pretty big news, wish I could have gotten a text alert on it. Just happened to check the site before I went to bed. I haven't been signed up for text alerts for very long, but are they only football related? I can appreciate the need for limiting the alerts, just not clear on what qualifies. I may have already read what they are based on, but it could have been erased in an alcohol-induced memory purge....cheers

  • This is definitely what I was hoping for. At this point, I'd much rather have a fully healthy Maymon for a whole season than a rushed back, not in game shape Maymon for half a season. Especially since I don't see Stokes leaving at this point.

I think this could also give the other players some closure on the issue which could help. Just speculation here, but I wonder if any players entered the season with any uncertainty as to their role. Or if any of them have taken the mindset of "well when Jeronne comes back it will be better" after a loss. Well now the situation is clear and there is no place for excuses. I hope this causes some guys to step up and be the floor leader and high-motor player that is missing when he is out.

And then 2013-14.... that starting lineup..... mmmmmm.

(Just too bad UK is going to bring in an NBA playoff team as their freshman class or else winning the SEC might be realistic.)

That's 100% my fault. I just forgot to send the text alert.
