Being a leader...

  • Being a leader means you do not go with the safe pick or the sure thing. Being a leader means you dare to be different and want to build something that you call your own. We signed some big leaders today and lost out on one key follower and he said as much in his interview that he is a follower. Not hating on the kid, he has the right to his choice. But I choose to focus on the fact that we now have leaders such as Carr, Jenkins, North, JRM, and Dobbs. We also already have Wharton on board for next year who is for sure going to be a leader. Every team has leaders and followers, we are building the leaders that will get us the followers.

    Really? Why call someone a follower? Do you know him? Kind of distasteful in my opinion. Seems like a high character kid.

    Not distasteful at all and he is a high character kid. High character is just one of the traits of a leader. His point is a leader doesn't lead by making the comfortable decision. He's a good kid and I wish him well but I agree with CheckerboardVol.

    Nowhere did I challenge his character. But he went for the sure thing. He followed the success rather then attempt to build success. It's just the facts. I am not hating on the kid, just stating that I am still encouraged by the leaders we have signed and eventually we will get guys like Bell that prefer to go somewhere there is success rather then try and build something. You build with leaders.

    I just think continuously bringing up a point we didn't get what was honestly our top target is more or less in poor taste. I know he brought up the point we got some great kids, which I truly believe we did. Were we able to address all areas of need? No, I know we didn't but the staff only had 60 days to attempt the right the ship. I am just a believer if we swing and miss why even bring it up after the initial pain? I didn't get to watch the interview as I am at work, but it is hard for me to believe Bell said I am going to OSU as there are great leaders there and I will follow in their footsteps, or something to that effect.

    Calling him a follower seems like a bit of hatin but you are entitled to your opinion. My guess is that Bell feels like he will be a part of building something at OSU - a team that consistently competes for Nat' Championships. Obviously - what we have to build is a team that can first complete in the SEC East, then for the SEC championship. Either journey could be rewarding - I just wish he picked our journey . . .

    Very well said! I challenge my son all the time not to take the easy way either in school work or sports. Blaze a trail that may be harder but will build his work ethic and character as well as provide a sense of pride in achieving something special not easy.

    No one on this board ever called kids going to Vandy or Kentucky, like Cunningham or Hatcher or the RB from Memphis last year, over more comfortable situations, leaders. Kids generally get four years at college. To me, choosing a place where they have a better chance to meet all their goals and succeed doesn't say any less about their leadership or character, than choosing to go someplace where by going they give the school an instant credibility boost but face longer odds in meeting their goals. It would be better to quit wasting time focusing on some deficiency or flaw in the kids that choose to go elsewhere and spend more time on how to make UT football a place where the top recruits in the nation know they can meet their goals and have tremendous team and individual success, just like it used to be. I'm sure when that happens (and I believe it will), folks won't be calling kids that choose less comfortable situations than Knoxville true leaders for going elsewhere.
