Bates coaches at a rival school close to me. I have spoken to him many times, either at Alumni events here in Jax or school athletic events.
He's very busy here coaching and in TX with his buisness ventures but, his blood is Orange. Matter of fact, the 1st time we spoke, we were on a plane from Dallas and he said, "nice to see a real UT hat." He told me at the time that his youngest son would have the best chance to go to UT and that he loves UT. Now that was 4 years ago and obviously things have changed but, he told me a month ago that as long as he's comfortable with the new coach, it'd be hard for him to turn UT down. TIFWIW

I hold out the hope that one day Bill Bates will be back in Big Orange Country as a secondary coach, then DC and ultimately the HC. He has always been one of my favorites VFLs. Was glad to hear that he is getting involved in coaching and hope he works his way up the coaching ladder.
