Bill Bates - is he ever around the program?

  • I've never really heard much about Bates coming back to Knoxville, attending practive, games, etc.

Is he around the program at all?

His son sure looks like a beast and I hope the Tennessee legacy makes him a Vol, but it concerns me a little bit that I've not heard much about Bill's involvement since leaving UT.

I know Dillion came up to watch a practice, but not sure if Dad was with him.

  • Bates coaches at a rival school close to me. I have spoken to him many times, either at Alumni events here in Jax or school athletic events.

He's very busy here coaching and in TX with his buisness ventures but, his blood is Orange. Matter of fact, the 1st time we spoke, we were on a plane from Dallas and he said, "nice to see a real UT hat." He told me at the time that his youngest son would have the best chance to go to UT and that he loves UT. Now that was 4 years ago and obviously things have changed but, he told me a month ago that as long as he's comfortable with the new coach, it'd be hard for him to turn UT down. TIFWIW

That's real good to hear. Thanks for the insight, abvol! +1

  • I hold out the hope that one day Bill Bates will be back in Big Orange Country as a secondary coach, then DC and ultimately the HC. He has always been one of my favorites VFLs. Was glad to hear that he is getting involved in coaching and hope he works his way up the coaching ladder.

One of my all time favorites as well, viking. I grew up a Dallas Cowboys fan, a big fan of DD Lewis and later followed by Bates. That guy was the original "honey badger", cause he didn't give a censored who he had to hit.

Best news I've heard about Tenn football in probably 5 years.

    This kid is a stud.

  • Mind you, there is a lot of water under the bridge since then and a lot to go before signing day 2014. Don't shoot the messenger if he goes to USCjr or UF.

  • Don't forger that Mom (Denise) was a UT cheerleader as well. Lotsa orange in that young man's blood.

That said, I can remember a Tennessee quarterback whose parents were Ole Miss all the way, but he came here because his Daddy thought we had a better O-line. Your kid is more important than your school.
