Braves?

Did braves pick up a pitcher just now? Is he from the Cubs but not nearly as good as Demps? Like I don't know the details of the trade

Yeah, Paul Maholm I think. him and outfielder Reed Johnson. We got them from the Cubs, but I don't know who the Braves gave them

Correct. Maholm has pitched really well lately, and he's not a bad pitcher overall, so seems like a solid pickup for the Braves. And Reed Johnson is a good guy to have as a fourth outfielder. But I didn't see what the Braves gave up, so I can't say for sure that it's a great deal.

However, being a Braves fan I think the last guy that we got in a trade during the season that actually worked out was Fred McGriff way back in 1993? That's the only memorable trade for me. I read somewhere that the Braves went 51-19 that season after picking up The Crime Dog. I was going to camp at McCallie and saw him play in his second game as a Brave against the Cardinals. That happened to be the game the day after the Fulton County Stadium Press Box fire.

oh yeah definitely. I thought you were just saying it's been that long since any good trade. and I feel like Bourne has definitely been a solid pick-up

The Braves picked up lefty Paul Maholm and outfielder Reed Johnson from the Cubs in exchange for right-handed pitchers Arodys Vizcaino and Jaye Chapman, and the Braves got some cash in the deal as well. The odd part (to me) is that Vizcaino had Tommy John surgery in April, so I'm a little surprised he was trade bait.

Vizcaino was considered one of the top 40 MLB prospects in all of baseball before the surgery. Tommy John surgery is just a minor inconvenience these days - most of the players come back throwing harder then before surgery and it gives young players a chance to refine their mechanics. As a Braves fan I saw this trade as a win for both teams.

The Braves' stable of young pitchers is deep. Atlanta was able to tap into that depth to shore up its rotation without giving away any of its top-shelf prospects. Delgado, Teheran, Minor and Betancourt are safe. Getting rid of Vizcaino is a sacrifice, but not the biggest sacrifice the Braves could have made.
I'm glad Atlanta didn't mortgage its future for a rental. As it is, Vizcaino has major question marks and the Braves have an option to keep Maholm next year. Is this a game-changer in the NL East? Probably not. But it's a nice deal that adds to the Braves' rotation depth.

True, but that's a pretty stiff measurement. I don't see the braves trying picking up Silver Slugger award winners lately (their lineup is pretty good and very young so it's not that they need it). Fred McGriff is one of my all-time favorite players and I definitely agree with you, but just saying they haven't needed to go after names that big since then because they're in a better overall position.
