Bray 'down' after tough finish

ATHENS, Ga. — Tyler Bray said he could have done "a lot more" in Tennessee's 51-44 loss at fifth-ranked Georgia, but coaches and teammates didn't blame the Vols' quarterback.

  • I agree with shoeless Wes, Nice article: although he had the turnovers, I think Bray as gotten better since the Florida game. Shows more spirit, and more fight.

    Odie

  • Dooley's right: Bray hasn't been in a lot of these situations because of the games he played in his Fr & So years. I wanted to win, but I'm glad to hear the way Bray led the offense back on the field with 15 sec left. I think if they keep working to improve and keep fighting games to the finish, good things will eventually happen.

  • three throws were critical. The two misses to Justin on back to back 3rd downs where Justin was open, and the int on the back shoulder throw to cp. Those are the plays you have to make to beat the #5 team on the road. The game was winnable for sure. Not blaming just TB obviously. Long list of defensive issues.

  • “He definitely grew up,” Lathers said of Bray. “He fought for 60 minutes. He tried to make plays. He ran the plays that Coach Chaney called. The offense did a great job

  • They're talking like men now. They can point out their mistakes, but they are a team now and are very supportive. They are just such a better team this year. It's good to see some maturity and improvement with each passing week.

Agreed. I honestly think we can take a W in 2 of the next 3. Even with the loss, I think our guys grew up a lot tonight.

  • And man...he made some really great throws today. A few of them were throws I don't believe any other SEC QB has the arm to make. A few bullets into tight windows over the middle? And that floated beautiful spiral down the left side off his back foot that CP dropped? Oh my, a thing of beauty.

See, I find this stuff just kind of crazy. You still feel like UT won?

    But they didn't.

You can't deny that they made significant progress, regardless of the final score. The wins will come, this game was just the start of the team finally overcoming some of its most glaring flaws in recent years.

  • CDD's 100% correct about Tyler and his journey, and only now am I convinced (in large part because of the post-game reaction) that he'll get there. I'm proud of him under the circumstances, but feel bad for him too, because too many fans want that journey to be made on a Boeing 767 instead of in a nice, new pair of Adidas.

"Bravely taking to his feet, he beat a very brave retreat." Sir Robin's Minstrels.

  • Young grasshoppa growing up. Not once did I see him hang his head. Not once did I see him not competing. Not once did his body language say "we're beat. A mostly non-chalant Bray, who is usually ready to just say forget about it took it to heart this time. Until you wear it on your shoulder, nobody else can see it. This will be the game that turned it around for Tyler. It all clicked in Athens. Write it down. GO VOLS!

On the throw that Bray missed to Hunter where the defender fell down, Bray threw the ball before Hunter came out of his break. If you watch closely, you'll see the reason the defender fell is because they got their feet tangled, throwing the timing off. Nobody's fault. Stuff happens.headslap

  • "I don't need to win it. I need to let the team win it." Big time statement by TB. That attitude will help him play even better in the next tight one.

And while I commend him for not pointing the finger at CP, the fact is Tyler really could not have thrown a better ball. That was simply an embarrassing drop. I hope CP doesn't let that haunt him.

    Man, we are so close!

I hope. A win @ Starkville would be huge.

    CrockettTM

  • Starkville is crucial. If we had beaten Georgia I would have been much more concerned about where our heads would be at going into that one. (Not saying I'm glad we lost, just that I would have been more worried.) As it is, there's surely no way this team will look past a ranked SEC opponent. I expect (hope) that we will play really well and get that win.

If we do win the next one, that at least gets us over the mental hump with the whole ranked opponent thing. (Assuming Miss. St. doesn't melt down against Kentucky, which is actually possible given how easy it would be to get caught looking ahead to a TN team that just put 43 on GA.)

If we do get that one, then AL becomes the next great attempt to shock the world, which they will be very hyped to do, and who knows? Barring that unlikely outcome, SC becomes the potential and most doable signature win we've all been hoping for. Play it out solid the rest of the season and win a decent bowl game and I would be extremely pleased.

Bray, Hunter, and CP will not have reached their collegiate potential this season. Though hopefully they will start getting close to it very soon. They won't stay, but wouldn't it be amazing to see what they would look like at their mental, emotional, and physical peaks? For a full season? Wow.

I understand your point. During normal times we would be upset that we blew a couple of chances to win the game. I'll admit I have tempered my expectations after the FL game - a game I think we should have won. Now, I'm happy to see progress being made. No expectations to win this game - just a hope.

I've found that lower expectations is the key to avoiding disappointment. lol

  • This team is growing up. Let's hope they can continue their improvement, and close out some of these upcoming SEC games.
