Bray working to improve 'patience'

UT football players were given at least two big individual goals to focus on during the team’s bye week. Tyler Bray’s were simple to note but much more difficult to execute.

  • The big question to me is will Bray be at UT when the mental part clicks in. I guess I need a little patience myself when it comes to Bray. It's hard to realize he has only started about 17 games for us so mentally he is a mid year sophomore. +1 Wes.

  • I think Tyler will be here for his senior year as he still has much work to do to get down the mental and emotional part of his QB duties.

  • I just hope It dnt change something about him to have the ability to make the big plays he just needs to realize that when the big play is not there to check it down

  • Bray needs to get his completion perception to over 70 percent at least for the next few games. If that's happening, the offense is clicking and some ranked teams will go down. If it ends up around 60 or below.... there's going to be a lot of anxiety out of the fans the next weeks.

  • My sense is DD and Bray have great communication. That speaks well of them both and an improvement for both of them. I also sense that DD and the team as a whole are have bonded and are communicating at a much higher level this year. I remain very optimistic about this season.

  • Excellent article Wes. Bray really has an outstanding arm. Now let's get the proper mix between the pass and run. Does Bray have the authority to change plays at the line of scrimmage? If 8 are in the box can he check to a pass?? Likewise if the defense goes to dime coverage can he check to a run?
    Thanks for the insight.

Yeah!!! Any team with 70% completion is expected to win. 60% is darne good. T- Matin won a national championship with just barely over 50% completion for the season although he completed 23 passes in a row against SC that season, an SEC record.

If what I laughingly refer to as my "memory" serves, I read an article a week or so ago that stated Bray does not have the authority to change plays. nono
The coaching staff does that if they think it's needed.

  • According to Jimmy Hyams in a recent Nashville radio station interview, Bray does not have the green light to check out of plays. That is one of the reasons we have struggled running the ball prior to the Georgia game.

  • This is a key point to Bray's readiness for big time football, SEC or NFL. If he can develop the right balance between patience AND aggressiveness, he will be a great game manager. If he can learn to read defenses and make on-field checks, he will be a true QB stud. These are major developments for the QB and absolutely necessary for big time ball. Really think TB will be back for his senior, but I would not blame him for getting paid if he makes the move.

  • I like Bray, I have been waiting to see his patience and check down to the second, third and sometimes fourth target. Then I know he will be an NFL quarterback and he will complete over 70%. Wins will flow if he can do that along with a line that can give him three to four seconds. He does need his fourth year along with several others.

  • The "checkdown" effectively changes the play call. What the defense appears to be giving you can change in a heartbeat after the ball is snapped.

If Hunter and/or Patterson are drawing double coverage downfield somebody's going to be open underneath. Bray's job is to get to that guy asap and let him rack up yards after the catch.

I don't mind watching a 10-12 play drive occasionally and I'm sure the Vol defense is down with that.
