Bring me Kirby Smart

Just makes too much sense. We can't change back to a 4'3 defense now. If we retain Dooley he's not gonna be able to get a top notch DC and recruiting will suffer.
Hire Smart he fixes the 3'4. He could even call defensive plays and retain Sunseri. Theres no arguing Sal and Smart are great recruiters.

Why double down on Sal? Why not hire a proven HC?

Why is Smart a slam dunk? Sunseri made a great deal of sense on paper - but got here and sucked. It is much easier to be a DC - when you have 5 stars at every position and are in a state that produces a boat load of top level HS talent every year. Could be a good move, but could also fail as miserably as Sunseri has.

I swear to God if we hire one more guy just because they've worked for Saban I will lose my mind. This is not a learn on the job school, and we need a proven winner. If you can't get a homerun then get Strong. Hiring Smart would be a huge mistake, and will not excite this fanbase like it needs to be.

Actually Sunseri didn't make that much sense on paper. A career assistant brought in to coach a defense in a critical year for the head coach. Particularly where the DC would be asked to change the base defense. Probably needed a more experienced successful DC, even if he came from a less thought of FBS conference. However, that's me Monday morning QBing now, without the benefit of knowing what the options were or how to evaluate the options if I had that information.

DE- Jacques
DT- Couch
DT- Sentimore
DE- Williams
Or you could insert McCullers in, and move Sentimore to DE, and bench Jacques or Williams.

I'm with you OP.. unless of course we get Gruden.
I'd want Smart over Patterson or Strong, despite him not having HC experience. I think HC experience is overrated. See Dan Mullen, Will Muschamp, and every other HC who succeeded in his first head coaching job.

I would go back to a 4-3 this week.... It worked much better than what it is we're tryin' to do now.

What makes you think Smart will be a good HC? Good D-Coordinator yes, but nothing is there to show he would be a great HC. Too much of a gamble IMO.

I'm not disagreeing with you but what head coach out there makes sense? Charlie Strong but he seems destined for Arkansas. Maybe Gary Patterson but he could be going to Austin. Who else?

Actually -- there were a lot of UT fans that were happy when Sunseri was hired. No big name DCs were coming to work at a place with a coach that was on the hotseat. He would not have been my first choice, but many people on this board were happy about the hire (e.g. made sense to them).
