Butch Davis - only true guarantee of success

Would love to get Gruden but he is not a guarantee of success. Gruden has not coached college in a long time. Saban was a guarantee at Alabama. Spurrier was a guarantee at SC. In my opinion, Butch Davis is a guaranteed success at TN because of his consistent success in college and experience as a Defensive Coach. I still prefer Gruden but objectively Butch Davis is the safer choice. I am suprised he is not getting more discussion. folks are going to be very dissappointed if Gruden does not work out. And in the meantime, Auburn or Ark (Butch Davis alma mater) could be making the move on Butch Davis.

Davis has proven he can build programs.
Bad thing is, its ended ugly most places he's been.

Too many problems and baggage from his days at UNC. Definitely a proven winner though.

Odds of him getting the program nuked, are probably as good as him turning it around.

I like Davis, but that UNC implosion was a mess. I think he was absolved of any "wrong doing", but I have a hard time believing he didn't know what was going on. If he didn't, i'd be a little uncomfortable with a coach who was that oblivious to what was going on with his players.

Great coach but he would have as much baggage as Petrino. Actually, I find Davis more troubling from a football perspective as it will lead to some sanctions at UNC. But that is not dismissing Petrino's demise (as the hiring of his mistress was an athletic department issue too).

you have to believe he has learned his lesson on the UNC issue. And that is hart's job to enforce. Saban has proven (and our results this year have proven), we need a defensive minded coach. Think about this year with only a decent defense. Against Florida - UT scored 20. SC scored 11, UGA 17. Against Georgia - TN scored 44. UF scored only 9 and SC 35. Against South Car - UT scored 35, UGA 7 and UF 44 (so the one exception). If we had a defense, we are very close. Gruden is a great choice but not guaranteed. Butch Davis guarantees we will consistently be back in the top 15 with chances at SEC and NatChamp on periodic years.

Davis' best record at North Carolina was 8-4 and they got put on probation under his leadership.

What was Carolina's record before he arrived? I do not know, just asking. I certainly know he won big a Miami. at that time, he was the most coveted coach in America when we went to Cleveland. Mike Hart will keep us off probation so folks should not worry about that. We need a coach that can win and stresses Defense. Defense wins in the SEC and that is it (look at LSU and Bama).

Too much dirt around Davis in my opinion. The program doesn't need that.

Too much baggage with butch and NCAA will be proactively keeping an eye on him if he gets another job . Not what we need
