  • Apparently he has invited 30-40 former lettermen to watch the National Championship game with him and the coaching staff. Credit to Brice at VQ. Wow, CBJ gets it.

This won't help with the on-field product, but if it helps these former lettermen feel connected to the program again (and therefore better sellers of UT football), then I'm all for it...

I think an argument could be made that this will reenergize some of our base, which should enhance our gamedays as well as help with legacies and other connected prospects. That will affect our on the field product. I take it that you disagree?

  • he gets it??? Because he invites some former players to watch a game with him? Whew, truly remarkable the things that impress people.. You know what's impressive and actually matters? Recruiting good players. Wake me when that happens..

Explain what exactly it is that we have to sell right now aside from facilities and history? We'd better find a way to showcase both if we want to get the players who are needed to wake you from your slumber.

Bringing the lettermen back into the fold will help in terms of spreading a positive perception regarding the program, but it doesn't have a direct impact upon the actual product on the field every Saturday. Yes, it will help with recruits and landing big-time players, but as we've seen with USCw it doesn't matter how many stars are by a players' name if the coaching staff can't get them coached up and motivated. Notice that I did say it would help with selling the program, so I'm not ignorant of the impact it will have on that level. I just want to see some improvement on the field to go with these steps Jones is taking to improve relations with the former players, and that's something we will have to wait until the 2013 season to assess.

You will get no argument from me. We have to develop our players and have good schemes. We've got to get better...much better.

Unbelievable. What else can the guy do? He and his staff are working their tails off recruiting who they feel like will be the best players, mending bridges and bringing back former players, professing the love for the job that is needed to rebuild it. I personally love having a coach who wants to be here and already has shown is a tireless worker. Boys we are still reaping what was shown we let Coach Fulmer go the way it went down. Say what you want about karma but he was and is one of the finest men to wear the orange and we didn't know what we had till it was gone and we went the way of the snake oil salesman who traded all character for your beloved stars see what that has gotten him. Also a lawyer / ceo who had no passion, work ethic, or a love of the job and it showed. I have had season tickets for 25 yrs and we finally have a football coach again. What we need now is for everyone to get behind this staff and bring back the big orange family concept that has been dead for the last 5 yrs. I for one can not wait till the fall, I truly believe for the first time we have the right man to bring us back. If you can't get over things like stars and names start wearing that nasty crimson they need more unrealistic, jump on the band wagon fans. We need stand behind the orange fans that are positive and supportive if we ever want to get back where we belong.

Some of you act as if all CBJ has to do is call up the elite recruits and they will just fall all over themselves to commit. I don't understand where that expectation comes from. I'm sure CBJ would recruit nothing but 4 and 5 star guys if it were that easy. Right now, he's trying to do the best he can with the position that he finds himself in. Let's give him a chance to prove what he can do. Let's temper expectations with a little reality.

While inviting former players back to Knoxville certainly won't help significantly with recruits, it's also certainly not going to hurt us.

And for those butthurt Vols fans who are still stinging from the Butch Jones hiring, kindly shut up. You're simply not helping voicing your displeasure. You make us other fans and UT look like idiots, which is a contradiction to being a fan. I'm not telling you to be happy or change your complete outlook (I was neutral to the hiring, still am, and will be until the end of the season, but it's encouraging reading these little nuggets), just don't say anything until the season begins.

  • What do you want in a coach? For me I want him to do everything he can to get UT back to winning. Right now he can't practice players, he can't recruit so what can he do? He can get people( including former players) to buy into what he is selling, if he can't get us die hard fans and former players to get behind him, how is the 17 y/o kid who lives in Florida or Texas going to buy what he's selling? I think he is rallying the troops because he knows a raucous neyland stadium sells itself, and former players are recruiters too. I think so far he is doing all he can.

  • People also seem to forget that Alabama and Notre Dame were landing 4 and 5 star recruits way before Saban and Kelly got there. Heck, Tebow was a Bama commit for Shula before switching at the end. Alabama ALWAYS gets that state's top recruits, regardless of who's coaching. People have become blinded by stars and they quit using common sense. To state that Jones isn't going after 4 & 5 star guys is absurd. It's just hard to land them right now!!!! If he turns it around and upsets GA, FL, Bama, (which I think he'll do), and mends recruiting relationships then the Vols will back in the top 10 in recruiting. Patience people. Saban won what, 6-7 games his first year at Bama, including a loss to one of the LA schools for the blind?
