Butch's offense, please tell me how it differs from

  • what we ran last year. Ours was up-tempo, mostly no-huddle multiple receivers spread wide. How does his "don't call it a spread" differ?

  • Our no huddle seemed awkward and uncomfortable last yr. I wouldn't really call it uptempo last yr. they just didn't huddle so Tyler didn't have to think too much. It was really just a slow no huddle

  • This year Cinci I think was 57% run 43% pass. That's why it's not a spread, they hit you in the mouth...

    Chaney was a pass machine, we will be much more balanced.

  • Sorry, not meaning to be argumentative but that quotes Feldman who has "a source" which may or may not be accurate. Granted Bray did not come out and deny it but he hasn't announced nor hired an agent so he could still come back. He may be talking to the staff to see how he might fit their offense before a final decision since he is projecting to 2-3 round. He may be getting some good advice to come back and show he can be a mature adult for a season, not a petulant child at times (KY 2011, Summer 2012, & Vandy 2012).

    Now that debate can go on but what I am looking for is an analysis of how an immobile quarterback would fare in Butch's offense.

    Also ESPN reported it and it was widely discussed by their talking heads.

    Jones has been asked a variation of this question several times. His response has been that they adapt the offense to fit the skills of the QB, whomever that might be.

    This is a really interesting topic. We ran what I consider a "pro spread" because our linemen took normal splits. While we were looking to create vertical passing lanes through horizontal 3-and-4 wide positioning, which is a spread offense basic tenet, we didn't shift much to create mismatches and that was frustrating to me. In what I consider a "college spread", the linemen also take wide splits and execute zone blocking in order to create vertical running lanes as well. I went back and watched our game against Cincinnati and I believe we will use wide split zone blocking for our running game based on what I saw there.

    The huge advantage of having a running QB in this offense is that it forces the defense to keep an extra man in the box to account for the QB. This really opens up the passing game because it is one less man to protect against the vertical seams of the passing game. Look at Florida - Spurrier's Fun-n-Gun was just a spread offense that ran multiple shifts to create wide receiver mismatches on safeties. Urban Myer's offense did the same thing but he put the running QB in there - Tim Tebow - and it created all sorts of mismatches downfield, which is why he was so effective in college.

    As I said before, I feel pretty certain that we'll run a lot of single & no back offensive sets with wide spilts and quite a bit pre-snap movement to force a mismatch. It will probably look a lot like Texas A&M, although we don't have Johnny Manzeil to run it and I don't know if we will be as up tempo (we'll see). Two of the most prominent proponents of the spread - South Carolina and Florida - have abandoned the spread as a primary offense in favor of power running games. However, it should still be noted that both still use plenty of spread formations - that long pass to the TE over the top that South Carolina threw against us was straight out of the Fun n' Gun playbook and has worked against us for 20 years.

    Anyway, I could go on but my guess is that Jones really wants Peterman to win the starting job so that he can at least make the defense respect a mobile quarterback and give us more open space for the passing game. I should also note that the zone blocking run game favors a back that makes quick decisions and decisive cuts and runs downhill quickly. Size doesn't really matter as much as the ability to get to a hole within a tightly defined window of time. It will be very similar to the running game that Kiffin used.

  • I apologize if this has been asked before, but did Worley run the spread in high school? Personally, I believe Worley will start, considering he has SEC game experience and has a good arm. Both Peterman and Worley are smart students of the game, and I feel that both could do well reading defensive schemes.
