  • If you were coaching UT, would you turn CP into a two-way player and have him play defensive back as well? He has the athleticism to do it.

  • We had a thread on this awhile back. Majors did that with Carl Pickens and it worked quite well.

Wonder, though, if CP has the smarts to know what to do back there. He apparently still isn't all there with his routes on offense.

I just joined not long ago so I must have missed that first thread on it. I knew Pickens did it and it worked fine. I just wonder if CP can do it. It adds some much needed speed to the secondary.

  • The staff doesnt have that type of vision..

  • I'm also guessing that the way concussions and neck/spinal injuries are now days, that players probably wouldn't do it for safety and future related reasons..

  • CP is not quite Carl Pickens........while talented and fast........he is not the fluid hips, quick as a cat type that made Pickens able to play both ways. Pickens might have been the best athlete ever to play at UT that had the muscle to do so at S too. CP is close but IMO would not be as effective but I cant say once I was beat bad deep a few times that late in the 3rd or 4th in a game I wouldnt put him back there 30 yards deep in a certain situations to ball hawk.

While I agree with u Sam that the newer CP (Patterson) may not be everything the older CP (Pickens) was, however I can say without much fretting that he would be an improvement over any DB on the current roster. I was calling for this in the earlier thread as well a few weeks back. I wish this staff would of tried it as I am certain he could've erased a few (most) of the big plays we have given up by, if nothing else catching them before they scored! stache

  • I don't think he would be good on defense. Have u seen him play defense when he can't quite make the catch? Nope. Most of the time its an int for Bray.

  • CP is amazing to watch on offense. However, he isn't very physical on routes. I've seen him let CB's knock him off his routes-especially slants. Therefore, I don't see how he would be a good DB if he doesn't possess the physicality. Just my two cents.

I agree. Super athlete doesn't necessarily equate to good DB. But hey, nothing else has worked. Just saying.

  • I think the idea someone threw out about having CP play deep on hail-mary situations is a great idea. Mainly because it only requires you to swat a ball away and if he can catch it and run, he has an open field in front of him to take it 100 yards.

I think we all would like CP's chances if he caught it at the goal line and had 7-9 opposing players scattered in front of him.

  • Pickens was used as a 'ball hawk' more than anything else. His primary job was to play the ball on deeper, over the middle passes IIRC. I could be misremembering.biggrin He was also much more aggressive than Patterson. Nasty attitude but fabulous athlete.

  • That's the way I remember it, too. He had four picks his freshman year.

You are remembering correctly tnbea66r. Pick wasnt the most "physical" player either = but he didnt have to be and neither would Patterson. Roam the back end andjust go up and get the ball and pick it off or knock it away. I guess it's a moot point now as even as porous as we are/have been at DB we hvent tried it yet. I'm sure if a reporter asked Dooley about the possibility of trying CP back there he would give about a half-dozen lawyer type reasons why he shouldn't do so. All I know is we are only gonna have CP for one season so in my line of thinking it would be reasonable to give him a shot given the dire straits our secondary is in. Get the most out of him while he's here.

He would have to make tackles with our D.........lots of them too.........probably why it would be a bad idea to do much of it if any.

    SamVolsam

  • I wouldn't do it at this point. The risk exceeds the reward this late in the year.

He would be totally lost back there with no time to learn schemes. Pickens practiced with the defense for several weeks before he was given assignment defense. However, if we need someone to stay back and prevent the "hail Mary" he would be great for that with just a little coaching.

I wouldnt worry too much about the d-vtes 1985. I got hammered a few weeks ago for just discussing CBP for a possible fundraising/PR type AD or a similar position in the AD.

What can we buy/gain with the up votes anyhow? I've always wondered that but just never asked - for fear of a down vote! biggrin

It's all good. Not everyone is going to agree. I understand I got bashed in another thread bc I bashed a recruit and that's unerstandable. I shouldn't have done that and that's my mistake. I let the best of my frustration get to me.
