Can't defend Cuonzo any longer...

  • This is just getting worse and worse. Sure, we'll hear about the "best player on the floor" tonight being Caldwell-Pope and how do we not expect this after losing Maymon and Golden hurt, blah blah, but the fact of the matter is we just got beat by a sub .500 SEC team AT HOME!! This is terrible basketball to watch and I honestly just can't defend it anymore. He'll have next year (which is a common phrase for us UT fans now), but what do we have to really show that they'll produce? We'll have Maymon and Hubbs, but geez, just hate having to "wait for next year" in every single sport. Please talk me off the ledge!

I'm a Cubs fan, I've been doing that my whole life!

  • I don't think it's quite time to burn Cuonzo at the stake or anything, but goodness this team is so hard to watch... Sporting events are entertainment, and it's like watching paint dry most of the time. I watched until the buzzer though. It's like a car wreck, you know you should probably turn away but you just can't.

  • Don't watch basketball the rest of the year. This team stinks, and it's not making the tournament. Just look forward to next year. What you see is what you get with this team this year. There is no room for improvement because you won't suddenly get a PG, and you won't suddenly begin to run an offense...

Cuonzo will be back next year and if this crap happens again, or anything close to it he will be gone.

Yeah, need to give Coach a bit more time. After watching Pearl's teams, this isn't much fun, though. When is Pearl's probation over?

I feel your pain, Chris, I really do. This team is really tough to watch. They turn it over waaaaaay too much, and Stokes (although he's gotten better as the season has gone on) must be more aggressive in the paint. Georgia shot lights out tonight, and I think if you played this game again, UT would win...there's no way Georgia shoots like that every night, But I get your point, I honestly cannot defend this style of play. I'm not calling for Cuonzo's head at all, but something has to change. Either the offense is going to have to simplify, or we'll have to try someone else at point or something....SOMETHING has to work. There's no excuse for the type of regression we've had from year 1 to year 2. I understand injuries have plagued us, but there's no excuse for losing these types of games at home. None. I really hope Maymon comes back 100% next season and that Hubbs is as advertised, or Cuonzo is gonna feel the heat. (fair or not)

FWIW, I don't think this is all on Cuonzo. Cuonzo isn't the one turning the ball over, Cuonzo isn't the one missing shots and Cuonzo isn't the one getting burned on defense. But he's got to make some kind of change. Either a new lineup or a variant to the offense, or whatever works. What we're doing right now isn't getting it done, (the motion offense that is) but we don't have a true point guard so we can't run half-court sets effectively either. We are really in a catch-22, but Cuonzo has to pull something out of the hat...or we'll be lucky to make it back to the NIT.

Anyway, let's hope this team can pick itself up and move on. We have talent and we have the ability, we just have to put it all together.

I'd like to take this opportunity to coin the acronym BBB.

That's Bring Bruce Back for those of you having any trouble in deciphering.

  • When you lose 40% of your team and two of your best players it is tough to win. Take the two best players off any SEC team and they probably look alot like this team. We have some Freshman who will develop into SEC players. I know you wont give up on them if you are a Cubs fan you have lost alot. We need to support our team and our coach. I think it is unfortunate that anyone would want Pearl back. His total lack of integrity personally and professionally will follow him the rest of his career. Step back and consider we have never in the history of our BB program recruited two 5 stars two years in a row, Better times are ahead if we are patient.

  • Its tough to watch and Zo has to get them going + I do agree there is room for improvement/ coaching up guys etc.

but tonight we were missing 2 guys from a year ago that meant a total of 26 ppg and 11 rebounds per game and over 5 assists per game and played 32 and 28 minutes per game. That is a TON of production to replace from a team.

Add to that they just flat out made a few tough shots that were guarded coming down the stretch

but..........we could have still won that game and we need to see some positive signs down the stretch.

Tennessee was 6.5 PT favorites. UGA is an NIT team at best. This is a terrible loss, no way around it...

I think Cuonzo is stubborn, and won't adjust his style of playing with a bunch of athletes and no shooters and no ball handlers.

  • watching the vols i see a team that has no leader on the floor. Cuonzo knows he must try to control the pace with defense and half court basketball. And we don't have a true go to scorer and Mcbee who plays way more than he should couldnt guard my mom in a game of one on one.

We are an NIT team at best right now and have been for a while IMO. Maybe a bubble team a few weeks ago.

This team is flat out missing 2-3 good players + its not playing well + didnt shoot well for 10+ games + etc etc

I am not giving Zo a pass at all....he has to get more out of them....but once we lost Maymon and then Golden took a step back bc of injury and now he is out bc of another injury.......this team lost a ton like I posted + Stokes has just started getting going the last few games.

Zo has to get them going this year and let it carry over the summer and then get 2.5 players that we dont have now that might mean 40+ ppg and many more stats (counting Golden as a 1/2 point in that 2.5 with Hubbs and Maymon)

I agree with u bro. When the two best leaders of your team is out and one of them hasnt been his self most of the season we are going to struggle. But i still believe Coach Martin is one hell of a coach that will fight to keep his kids motivated and win.
