Top247 defensive lineman Jason Carr of Memphis, Tenn., says he remains "solid" in his commitment to Tennessee coming off his official visit to Knoxville last weekend.

  • Something about this recruit says keep watch. He seems genuine but at the same time, a little guarded. Jmo

I agree. He seems like someone who is looking for something...thinks he's found it but isn't sure.

  • I don't know if Carr will wind up here or not, but him and/or Lawson would be huge. All of the great UT defenses in recent memory have had mammoth dl's.

"Like I said, I’m still committed. I’m still solid with UT,” Carr said. “But I’m going to go in there at Alabama, and I’m going to listen to what they’ve got to say.”

....Webster's needs to change the definition of the word "commitment", cause it clearly doesnt mean what it used to. This is like saying to your girlfriend/spouse, "honey, you are great, but im going to go out on a few more dates, just to be sure.."

I have no problem with guys who want to take visits, take them all you want..i just have never understood why these kids "commit" and then say "BUT.." There are no BUTS! you are committed or you're not! I know that's recruiting life today, but it is frustrating.

    Okay, now im done.

Couldn't have said it better myself. +1

  • Seeing what they have to say = seeing how much importance Saban will put on his recruitment alone. If they cater to him like a superstar, he gone.

true that..Which is why, if Lawson is going to sign with us, i wish he would hurry up and commit..! I gotta believe that would really help Carr (and potentially others) make us look like the place to be..

  • It’s always unnerving to hear a recruit with an Alabama visit remaining on their schedule. I can already hear the sales pitch… “Saban is staying and 3 national titles in 4 years… that’s all I have to say”… SOLD! Tough to compete with.

that's my fear as well.. i know there have been posts by others saying not to worry, that Carr is solid and he's not going anywhere..but how can you not worry if he's taking a trip to Bama?

  • It is my belief after watching recruiting more closely the last few years, that a "commitment" is essentially just a place holder. School X has extended a scholarship and the recruit "commits" just to ensure that the scholarship will remain available. I know for a fact that at 18 I wasn't ready to make such a critical decision about my life, but I "committed" to the military to ensure I had some type of safety net.

And typically, once a guy "commits", the school ensures a scholarship will be available. That is unless you are Lane Kiffin and tell a kid less than a week from enrolling that you won't give him the scholarship you had offered and promised. Just ask Kylie Fitts.

  • I recognize it's pretty hard to make a choice of schools when everyone is pulling at you and implying that you're going to be star and can't miss future NFL fame. And it's fairly easy to "...coat tail..." on a program like Alabama. They're winners and probably always will be.
But I admire an athlete who thinks for himself and accepts the challenge of rebuilding a program like Tennessee. To be a part of that and put his stamp on the Tennessee program is a special opportunity for a young man. Of course I'm partial, but why wouldn't any athlete who's confident of his abilities go to Tennessee?

But then it becomes terribly unfair to the school..in other words, if we are holding a spot for Carr, are we potentially turning others down to do so? and if we are, what happens if Carr goes elsewhere on signing day? How do we make up for that reserved spot on the last day..? I mean, i know that somehow schools always figure out a way to make the numbers work, especially for someone like Carr, but at somepoint, you have tough decisions to make regarding offers when you crunch the numbers and base the calculations on the "commitments" you have or, to use your term, places you are holding and the number of offers you have made..

i realize this is tilting at windmills. the system is what it is, but that doesnt mean it cant be improved.. Maybe an early signing day would help, like in hoops? EE's help a bit i guess, i just wonder how an early signing period would work out, say maybe an October signing period in addition to the February signing day?

Ditto...always have to be mindful of the "Saban Spell" that can be cast on recruits! And who can blame any recruit not giving 'bama serious consideration if they're making a legit run @ them, regardless of a commit to another school or not?

That being said, stay in the fight & go get 'em BUTCH! Sooner or later we've got to start winning more of these recruiting battles.

  • It will be difficult for Jones and company to hold on to this guy, IMO..

    Bill B

  • He's 18 years old and making the biggest decision of his life to date. If he seems a little confused with all the bling and info coming his way, well, he probably is.

He should take all his visits. You only ride this limo once.

  • I will be nervous until he has signed.

  • Carr is simply being more transparent than most recruits. Really, how many 4 star DE's wouldn't be going in to Bama to hear what they've got to say? I hate it as much as any Orangeblood, but Bama is in the midst of a truly historical run. We'd be delusional to think that any recruit invited by Bama for an OV wouldn't at least be curious to hear what they've got to say. And we have to deal with that. We have to be good enough, persuasive enough, and BY-GOD-ORANGE enough to recruit against the big boys.
Go, Carr. Yes, go to Bama and Ole Miss and anywhere else. There's only one Rocky Top. I think you'll come back!

  • Per folks in Memphis and some of his friends, Carr doesn’t like Bama all that much (as of right now). Obviously when CNS comes calling, you listen. I also don’t think Bama would take him right now. I think he’s solid Tenn and that Ole Miss is the team to watch for, not Bama.
