Chaney

  • Chaney deserves mad props for his game plan. Almost all the big plays in the first half were film-room-plays. Then he adjusted the passing attack completely in the second half. the run/pass plit was almost exactly 50/50, even though we were not successful at first. He stayed with the run. Our receivers shredded what is reported to be one of the very best secondaries in the country. he did all this after losing Clear and Rogers. Frankly, a little better execution and we would have won by four touchdowns.

    This is a 9 - 10 win team.

My only complaint with the play calling is all the cutesy stuff on 4th and 1. I understood doing that when we were limited on our roster and didn't have the beef to push people around, but to win in the SEC we've got to be the kind of team that can will itself to a first down in short yard running situations. Other than that Chaney gets an A plus plus from me.

  • Believe me I drink the tennesseekoolaid as much as anyone, but I have to give an A-.

Those two fourth down conversion tries were huge at the time, not in the overall picture, and I didn't care for the pass call on the first one and the cutesy run call on the second. Maybe that shows not trusting our RB's. But I say you line up, run it up the guy or checkdown to some type of bootleg or short pass while in the appearance of running.

I just didn't understand either of those calls.

  • I can hear Chaney yelling now when CP was running, "run CP run".

  • i'm gonna give it a B+, the play calls on those 4th downs and at the goal i didn't completely agree with. IMO you have to give your RB a chance to show what he can do. Otherwise- I loved the pace and run/pass ratiovols

  • I love you guys and your overly optimistic views.

Much of what Chaney called last night will be destroyed by a good SEC defense.

Just for the record, I'm not downvoting you, but you will surely get some for saying that!stretcher...seriously though, what is your reasoning?

There's a lot, actually. I re-watched the game on offense twice afterward on DVR.

I spelled some of it out last night, but the basics are this:

    1) In the SEC, you cannot be "cute" on short yardage. Does Tennessee have a big, mauling back? Maybe not, but you cannot try to get 3rd/4th and 1 by going off tackle in the SEC. EVER.

    2) Chaney does not run a pro-style offense, no matter what any of you say. You will not be able to run the ball in the SEC from the pistol formation. The athletes on the DL and LB for every team are simply too good. Did anyone else notice the vast improvement from the running game once Bray finally went under center? Well, Chaney only did that in the 2nd half after repeatedly failing from the pistol.

    3) By the way the blockers moved, at least 2/3 of the called running plays were to the outside. Now, in Jim's defense, maybe he was trying to take advantage of Neal's speed. But, typically, plays designed to the outside are MOST effective after an interior run game is not only attempted, but established. Jim did it backwards, and that'll be destroyed by a front seven like Florida or Georgia.

    4) The two long touchdowns will never occur in the same fashion vs. an SEC defense. Both TDs came in "zero deep" or "one deep" situations where there was no safety help or the safety was on the other side of the field. Consider Florida and Georgia and 'Bama will be perfectly comfortable trying to get pressure with 4 or five at the most, that means there will likely always be 2 deep in those personnel situations. Cordarelle is a freak athlete, and so is Hunter and that will help save Chaney, but please don't expect those type of results against SEC-level athletic defenses.

    5) In his heart, Chaney still wants to throw 50+ times a game. It's just who he is. Look back in his career...when was the last time he called plays for a team that was really, really good at running the ball? You can say some of his Purdue teams had good running stats...a few did...but 95% of those runs were draws and tosses from the shotgun. He's never done, and he's yet to prove that he can coordinate an SEC-level run game...or anything close. The "regression" of the OL last year in the run game is, to me, 80% the type of run plays called against SEC-caliber defenses. Look where 'Bama and LSU make their money in the run game. BETWEEN THE FREAKIN' TACKLES. I'd love it if someone could break down how many runs Tennessee had between vs outside the tackles last year. I think it would be vastly different than those other offenses.

I realize I'll get trashed for this, and today is supposed to be happy. But after watching the 2nd replay, it became very clear that for every good athlete NC St had on the field last night, Tennessee had 2...or even 3. In the SEC, that's not going to be the case and Bray won't be picking apart secondaries with all day to throw against the Gators, Bulldogs, and Tide.

Just curious: Why do you think UT can't run the ball out of the pistol? Personally, I don't think the pistol had much of anything to do with Tennessee's failure to run the ball in some situations.

In fact, if you'll remember back to last season, the Vols actually ran the ball a bit better out of the pistol once they started running it following Bray's return. The pistol seemed to help the timing of UT's backs hitting the hole.

  • It's a degree of momentum once the RB gets the ball. My very good friend is an OC at the FCS level and he's explained to me numerous times that a "one cut" RB is much more successful in pro-style offenses, and that the "one cut" is almost impossible in the Pistol because the RB gets the ball at a point where he has very little forward momentum. In the traditional "under center" handoff, a RB has typically moved 4-6 forward before receiving the ball, while in the pistol he moves 2-3. He also receives the ball much farther behind the line and it allows defenders to become aware of the RB "having the ball" sooner.

I realize that they did seem to improve last year from the pistol, and I don't have a good answer for why except they played MUCH less talented defenses after Bray returned.
