Chaney breaks down Florida collapse

Jim Chaney spoke with reporters Wednesday for the first time since Tennessee’s second-half collapse against Florida, and the veteran offensive coordinator had plenty to say.

  • Chaney is a pass happy offensive coordinator and I'm not saying that is bad. I just think that the overall identity of what Dooley wants to be when it comes to looking at Defense does not match. With bigger and slower players you want to run the ball and play defense. dare I say with all the coaches and AD from that other team down south is the same identity.

    IT AINT ILLEGAL!!??!!??

  • I am glad that Chaney can admit mistakes and realizes that he abandons the run too quickly, but honestly how many more times are we going to have to listen to this guy apologize for not being able to manage the game when it gets going the wrong way a bit? Seriously, how do we EVER expect to win a big game in the fourth quarter if this guy gets debilitating brain cramps when the stress level ratchets up?

  • I'm really not trying to netpick, but it bothers me that a coach with this much experience had trouble knowing who was in the game, and when they were in there. I would think that you would have to know your personell so that you could call certain plays.

Either way, the biggest problem with everything that has happened sense the end of the game Saturday is that we lost. If these guys can go out and correct the issues they had, then all the junk goes under the rug. You won't get it beating the Zips this weekend, but go out and beat or at least compete with the Dogs in two weeks and life will get better.

  • I think Chaney is an OC like I play Madden. He went for the kill against Florida (I really like) and he stubbornly believes we can pass on anybody (good too), but its not good when an OC is so far in the moment they forget to run the ball.

I don't find the personel/groupings thing to be an issue. Hunter and CP are the two biggest weapons on O, I doubt either of them wanted to miss a snap, and I'm not sure the younger receivers were ready for that stage against Florida.

  • what could have been..up 20-13 with the ball at midfield and 5 mins left in the third. Pound the ball at them for a score in that situation and we might have flipped the script and gotten the gators frustrated and pass happy.

He could very easily be covering for another coach who has personnel responsibility and didn't do his job properly.

  • Overall I think he calls a good game. It's hard to understand why we don't have a screen game or hot blitz reads or safety valves. These things work as New Oleans opened their game with five consecutive passes to sproles out of the backfield. Make defenses pay for pinning their ears back. There is always an answer. These calls would have worked against Fla. in the fourth quarter. They are also good substitutes for running plays when the D is fast and strong.

  • I was at the game and intentionally watched the Florida D on every snap. Other than short yardage situations, I can't remember a single play where they had more than 7 defenders in the box. They played a 2 deep safety configuration to keep us from thowing over the top. In that scenario, UT has to be able to run the ball. I don't know what Neal averaged per rush in the first half and I am not a college football coach. But, with Neal having 74 yards in the first half, he had to be averaging 4 or 5 yards a carry. Why weren't we running the ball every down until we made UF put 8 or 9 in the box!

  • Although it would have certainly been nice to seen what may have come in the second half had we continued to mount a solid run game, I think Chaney may be catching too much heat here.

I think some forget that, as Bray said yesterday, some inches further on the CP throw and a bit more in front of Justin on that drop across the middle and we are probably seeing those as completions and possibly a win.

  • JC is not doing a good job at OC, and it shows when they play good teams, the other problem is UT is not getting big time running backs to sign, the last good running back we had was Hardesty. We need to get RB's like we used to have like Foster,Lewis,Henry, stephens and garner if we are going to compete in the SEC. scoring quick is great, but if you can't run the ball the defense gets worn out and the other team has to much time to work with and the result is games like last weeks.

FWIW, we are in the hunt on several elite backs at the moment.

  • This whole situation will play out very soon. We will know a lot more after the UGA game.

  • It's sad that UT has become a development program for coaches.

  • JC talks about the grouping and sub problems with the no huddle. Peyton manning said something the other night about huddle/no huddle it really doesn't matter the key is execution. Maybe TN should slow down a little and work on execution. I think you can win a lot of football games with this style of football. I just don't think it wins many games against elite defenses.

  • I don't know if we win or not, but i serious think we will put up 4 solid quarters win or lose.

Exactly right..Chaney should have come out in a 2 back set or even jumbo;sprinkled with short passing gaining 4 yards a pop and we would have gone up 2 td's..The whole stadium including the gator DC knew he was throwing for the end zone on 1st down and the result was 3 and out and total loss of momentum..I won't go into all the things I hate about Chaney but he's costing us games by not giving the opposition new wrinkles to defend instead of play calling thats been seen on film 100 times
