Charlie Strong + Brian Kelly...

  • .Some similarities in situations if we were to hire Charlie Strong...

Brian Kelly went undefeated in the Big East w/ Cinci and left at the PERFECT time. Cinci went on to play Florida in the Sugar Bowl and got mauled like 49-3. Louisville is more then likely going to go undefeated in the regular season. Charlie Strong's stock may never be higher. He will play probably an LSU or Florida team in the bowl game and get dominated...

For those wondering Notre Dame fired Charlie Weis on November 30th and his team went 6-6. If we go 6-6 I'd expect the same.

I'm not trying to start a fire Dooley thread, but just thought that if Charlie Strong leaves whether it's here or Arkansas or Auburn, it is a lot like Brian Kelly leaving Cinci.

I know that's really not what you were asking but even if I was choosing that would be my choice

Yea I like Strong a lot and think he'd succeed here. But if he runs the table, I wonder if he'd try and get out of Louisville before they get curb stomped in a BCS Bowl...

He does have Bridgewater for 2 more years so he can ride that out if he wanted.

I think as a coach or at least as a good one you always have to want to take the challenge against the best at least once in your career. Whether or not that's this year or not buy I would think at some point he would want that

  • For comparison's sake (and to satisfy my curiosity), I looked up the Rivals class rankings for Brian Kelly's last two years at Cincy (08 and 09) and Urban Meyer's last two at Utah (03 and 04). Kelly's 2008 class was ranked 67th and his 2009 class was 60th. Meyer's 2003 class was 90th and his 2004 class was 76th.

I wouldn't put much stock in that ranking. Recruiting in the Big East will never be great. Just because Dooley has a higher ranked class doesn't mean that he is an excellent recruiter or a better one than Strong would be. Just being in the SEC brings recruiting up to a new level. Plus the facilities, fans, tradition and name brand of Tennessee attracts a lot of recruits. These are huge advantages of recruiting from Tennessee versus Louisville that have nothing to do with a coach's recruiting ability. No way to know for sure, but I would guess Strong could do as well if not better than Dooley at UT in recruiting.

+1 Smart man. Strong's class is at 72 because its Louisville and its Louisville in a Big East conference without West Virginia and shortly Syracuse and Pitt. Not to mention its probably hard to recruit when everybody thinks you are leaving. La Tech wasn't ranked that highly, I suspect, when Dooley left.

  • I'll take Strong as HC and keep Chaney at OC to help hold our offensive recruiting together (would be his 3rd HC).

I agree, I guess we can all agree there isn't a lot wrong with our offense right now. I would go with a defensive minded HC as well and let Chaney continue to do his thing on offense if he's retained.

  • Well Strong has put himself in the position to be the IT coach this year. He's going to be sought after like Meyer and Kelly. I know everyone fell in love with the idea of Gruden. But I think Strong would be a solid choice. Maybe even better. He's been a DC in the SEC for years. A problem I could foresee is Arkansas making a run for him and he is from Arkansas.

A serious question, but would anyone see any problems with a black head coach coming to Tennessee with a beautiful wife who is white? I ask this question because Strong brought it up a few years ago in an article that he felt he had been hindered in head coaching offers because of his interracial relationship.

I'd have no problems and didn't even give a crap until I read that article. It's 2012. I think our fanbase is probably more interested in winning right now rather than who is married to who.

I know growing up it was scandalous, but come on who cares anymore? Just ol codgers who refused to accept change. I'm not really high on Strong coming to TN, but I do hope we do something about our atrocious defense TODAY. If not then everyone except Pittman, Graham and Chaney needs fired. I'd include Chaney, but who wants the Offense to have to learn a new system, while the Defense has to again learn a new system...not sure I want to watch that one..

I know why you're asking the question. Strong himself has brought it up a few times. All I can say is I would hope that race has nothing to do with it. +1 for bringing up a tough question though.

short yardage is a problem i think our off has been really good this year certinly not the reason for the losses but chaney does need to improve the short yardage runs...... needs to go back to the power I Its like novocain just give it time and it always works. but graham and pittman is doing a fine job so maybe they get it fixed......

I wouldn't care if he was married to Bin Laden's sister if he could win football games.

I don't know if that is necessarily true Atomic. Brian Kelly went to Notre Dame known as a high-scoring coach. However, he has adjusted to his roster and now has one of the top defenses in the country (with much credit to Bob Diaco, of course.) I do think an "offensive-minded" coach can still get the job, but he is going to have to be able to make the right assistant hires and the ability to adjust with his team strengths just as Brian Kelly has.
