Clay Travis tweet

  • Not a huge fan, but I will be sick if he turns out to be right!

@ClayTravisBGID: Talked to several recruiting experts recently. All expect Vandy to finish with better class than Vols. Unheard of.

    Tennessee85

  • In classic Clay fashion he gives no names of said experts.

I talked to several recruiting experts. They told me it was only June.

If Dooley gets fired it will happen, probably something Clay is banking on. We will finish ahead of Vandy. We are going to get a 4* RB, Vonn Bell, the Hawaii OG, Toby Johnson and others. Reeves-Maybin we have a strong shot at to. I will become worried September 1st if we start 0-1.

^This. Like any other program, Vandy must win to finished with a bang. Last year they were able to surprise a lot of opponents; that won't be the case this year. Regardless, signing day is 8 months away! It is way too early for predictions. simmer-down-na Clay…. simmer-down-na

I think any of these recruiting experts trying to project where UT is going to finish with any real certainty (and not simply for entertainment value) is ridiculous. UT's final tally in recruiting will be based on how well they play next year and specifically if the team can play Dooley off the hot seat.

Sometimes I wonder whether Franklin has cut some deal with Clay like the pay for play deals in radio back in the day. I jest.

  • I've talked to many normal people lately, and TN still kicks the ish out of Vandy...

  • The only chance Vandy's class finishes better than our's is if it's on GPA's. I guess he can still dream though!

    ocoeerivervol

  • I've talked to experts myself who say Travis has a "man crush" on Paul Finebaum.

    volwr88

  • Meh

When Franklin bolts this year to another school, that class will sink into the 30s or 40s.

  • Vandy, Vandy, Vandy. Poor Travis. When its a slow news period, he can always make up something from a unnamed source involving his beloved Dores and our VOLS. You would think he could find some news to report about a little event that is about to start in London.

  • I will have to see it to believe it, this time last year we had what , one commit?

    Amershamvol

  • At the end of the day the recruiting rankings don't mean anything, its how you finish on the field 2-3-4 years down the road. Look at Kiffin's only class at UT (I believe top 5) and there isn't much of it left. I'll believe Vandy recruits better than us this year when they beat us 3 out of the next 4 years and consistently get 8 wins. Assuming we win enough this year that Dooley is here in 2013 (and I think its a good assumption) we will consistently be at least an 8-9 win team for the forseeable future, Vandy will not.

I'd rather have 1 commit than what we have now. Just my opinion. If we finish like we've started we'll finish outside the top 25.

Watauga, true but that's not the point. I don't think Vandy will sign a better class than us but something is bad wrong if they do. It's embarrassing to even think about IMO.

  • Maybe they won't finish ranked ahead of us, but the fact that we're even discussing it as a possibility isn't good. In the past it hasn't even been a thought.

When was the last time Boise St in the top 25 and they win every year. I'll trust the coaches pick their players and coach them up.

Boise state is in a COMPLETELY different set of circumstances than us. You can't even compare the 2. They don't play the nation's best week in and week out. And just because their coaches "coach em up" doesn't mean ours will coach them up enough.

I agree its a different situation, but they consistently beat top teams when they play them. Point being that I don't put much stock in recruiting rankings. Sure there is a difference between what Alabama pulls year in and year out and what MTSU gets, but the difference between 2 and 10 and even 5 and 25 is so insignificant. I've seen so many UT players come in as 5 stars and do jack s**t and seen supposed 2 stars be NFL draft picks. I really believe we can play, compete, and win with the players we are recruiting, even if they don't have 5 stars by their name. With that said I could really careless if Vandy finishes 24 and we finishes 25. We will still beat the hell out of them annually.

  • He talks smack to get hits. He doesn't have to be right. Notice he never admits or brags when he's wrong. He's wrong way more than he's right but, when he is right, he wants everyone to know.

Fair enough. I see where you're coming from. Sure, there are instances where highly rated guys bust, but I'd rather take my chances with those guys if I have the choice between that and under the radar guys we hope work out. And I still believe we'll beat Vandy too...but I do think they're closing the gap on the 40-0 beat downs we used to annually put on them.

I like your optimism but history just doesn't support your argument. Yes there are going to be bust and surprises, 5 stars that flame out and 2 stars that blossom, in every class for every team. However the teams that consistently recruit in the top 15 (conservative) in the SEC are the teams playing for championships.
