Maybe they won't finish ranked ahead of us, but the fact that we're even discussing it as a possibility isn't good. In the past it hasn't even been a thought.

Your right. It isn't good. To put any credence in anything Clay Travis says is a reflection on us as fans. This discussion is on us and does not reflect what will happen in February. Vandy will be Vandy and we will be UT.

I don't have to put any credence in what Clay says. I know he likes to stir the pot. The only point I'm making is AT THE MOMENT you can look at any sites recruiting rankings and see that Vandy is right there with us, if not ahead of us. We're in on some good players and I tend to agree we'll be ranked ahead of them. But that's just speculation at this point. The only thing I'm saying is that it's closer than it usually is.

  • Clay is a smart guy. He knows that the best way to generate clicks on his website is to gain the attention of Tennessee fans, the group that follows him most closely. He doesn't care whether it's positive or negative attention. He needs to pay the bills, and to accomplish that task he's become a shock jock. Does he truly believe Dooley is a poor coach? I'm sure he does. Does he really like James Franklin? Absolutely. But by going over the top in his criticism of the former and praise of the latter, he knows he'll get Tennessee fans riled up. And that gets him attention.

In the process of galvanizing Tennessee fans, Clay has sacrificed his credibility as a journalist. I'm not sure he anticipated this consequence when he started Outkick the Coverage. Those who have read On Rocky Top would likely agree that it was a well-researched, well-written book. But the quality of his work has gone downhill as his need for attention has increased. It's an unfortunate waste of talent.

I'd rather have 1 commit than what we have now. Just my opinion. If we finish like we've started we'll finish outside the top 25.

Watauga, true but that's not the point. I don't think Vandy will sign a better class than us but something is bad wrong if they do. It's embarrassing to even think about IMO.

Which commit would that be or are we dealing in hyperbole. Your statement means we don't want Kameron Miles, we don't want Austin Sanders, we don't want Camion Patrick...Pick any recruit in the country and let all our others go and we would still be 'ranked' behind Vandy at this point. I hope you are going to be at the 'Gathering' in Atlanta. I want to buy you a drink of your choice and lace it with valium.biggrin 28 your better than this. Vandy will not be within 20 spots of us when signing day is over. This same thing was going on last year and by the way they are ahead of Oklahoma, Clemson... . Clay Travis is laughing his butt off right now.

In classic Clay fashion he gives no names of said experts.

I talked to several recruiting experts. They told me it was only June.

    +1

We do have 8 months to go. As well, we are ahead of the curve from where we were last year with recruits. Plus, we get to sign more people this year than last year. In closing, great summary, kyvolunteer.

Clay Travis is a moron that I no longer listen to or follow on Twitter. I wish I could have the handshake back that I give him several years ago.

I like your optimism but history just doesn't support your argument. Yes there are going to be bust and surprises, 5 stars that flame out and 2 stars that blossom, in every class for every team. However the teams that consistently recruit in the top 15 (conservative) in the SEC are the teams playing for championships.

I don't think that's what he was saying, I think y'all are both arguing the same point, all he is saying is if our coaches want the kids that are committing then we should be happy whether they are a 5* or 2*, at the end of the day football teams are comprised of people and those people are what wins games...we all know that a 5* can get complacent and bust, I don't think anyone is arguing against that

    TnMiles

  • Oh yea and besides Eric Berry who was the last 5* that was the top player on our team, I can't remember

My only point is take who you want, but if you're recruiting classes are not consistently ranked in the top 15 (someone would argue top ten) in the nation, SEC history suggests you're not going to be hanging any banners or handing out rings. If this is the same thing he was saying I agree we're unfortunately "talking" over each other.

I'm not sure, but UT hasn't been very good since he left.

Edit: The best player on last year's team was Rogers, like him or hate him, he was the best player for most of the season and he was a five star recruit.

I think maybe you're reading too much into my comment. Ive been pretty clear in recent weeks in sharing my opinion of our current class. Not going into detail today. I couldn't care less what Clay says or where Vandy is ranked I just don't like the looks of our class right now.

If Dooley gets fired it will happen, probably something Clay is banking on. We will finish ahead of Vandy. We are going to get a 4* RB, Vonn Bell, the Hawaii OG, Toby Johnson and others. Reeves-Maybin we have a strong shot at to. I will become worried September 1st if we start 0-1.

Similarly, with a decent record this year, Franklin will bolt to ANYWHERE BUT CANDY and they will finish outside of the top 25, maybe even top 50. That's just my twocents.

Rivals and Scout had him as a 5 star recruit. Was 247 up and running for Rogers and the 2010 class? I honestly can't remember.

  • When Vandy has the potential to put a qb and two wr in the first round or second of the draft..... they may somehow finish ahead of Tennessee in recruiting. Vandy finished 49th in 247's ranking last year after landing 4 star Kimbrow. Offensively this is possibly the most explosive UT has been in a long time. I don't even think Dooley can screw this year up unless his team his plagued by injuries. If Patterson is good to go next week... watch out. The first battle of the summer was just won.

247Sports wasn't around at the time Da'Rick Rogers was being recruited, so we didn't have him rated.

If you look at his player page on the 247 recruit tab he is listed as a 4*

I stand corrected. We didn't start until May 2010 or something like that, but apparently we did go through the signees for each team that year and gave them ratings. If you'll notice on his profile, he was ranked No. 28 overall in the 2010 class.

In all fairness that rating was assigned after that recruiting class cycle. Why they assigned him.. I couldn't tell you, but 247sports didn't exist during NSD for the 2010 class.

  • I don't have a side in this fight, but if someone put a gun to my head and asked me whether UT or Vandy would have a higher-rated signing class ... I'd take UT and feel like I had a pretty good chance of surviving.
