  • Wait for it.....

  • One thing I get out of this is that this guy didn't go to Knoxville thinking that it was his place but left absolutely loving it. Obviously Butch Jones and staff can sell the place pretty well. Also this guy is probably going to be very important his Senior year after some of our guys leave next year. As long as he chooses us of course.

  • Wait, wasn't one of our big "academic issues" that we didn't have a criminal justice major?

Ryan said he has 3 to play 2, so he could redshirt if we needed to do that as well. iMO a great get if indeed he commits as an EE

  • Ryan I hate to be this guy, but the offer list on Clay isn't that impressive. Is At 6-6 and 322, I would have expected more programs to be on him. Was there something that kept others away. I actually look at offer lists more than stars.

I thought someone might mention that. The stuff about UT not having a criminal-justice program was a false rumor. Not sure how that got started.

Why wouldn't they if they have bones underneath the football field?

  • I would take but I don't understand the sentiment that he will compete for PT this year instead of red shirting and then having two years to play without a returning player in front of him. Maybe that's just the sales pitch or maybe he can play and Butch would recruit another guy to take his place in 2015.

  • Thanks for the reply Ryan. I will bow to the coaches knowledge of the skills which they are looking for in an O-lineman. He certainly has the size to be good, if he chooses to come to UT, then coach him up and let's see what we've got here.

    Ryan,

I will take the blame for that one. I could have sworn I heard Coach Doug Matthews talking about it on the radio here in Nashville. Obviously, this was incorrect...not sure if he was wrong or if maybe it is a new major or more than likely I heard him incorrectly.

On a side note, CDM seems to have a lot of information on all of the academic issues and is really tuned in to those problems. He has researched it quite thoroughly plus still has lots of connections to the university. I know that SamVolSam has a link to some things that he has said...I dont have access to that link right now but maybe if Sam sees this he could post a thread about it.

  • Technically UT doesn't have a criminal justice major / degree. What UT offers is a major in Sociology with an emphasis in criminal justice. The degree will be a Sociology degree not a Criminal Justice degree maybe that's the confusion.

We need guys to contribute ASAP and be ready to start in '14. I'd rather him play this coming year if he's good enough and get some game experience instead of sitting on the bench.

The question is how much of a competitive disadvantage is this? How much harder is this degree than what our counterparts offer? Do recruits mind its not a major in CJ but rather a emphasis? How do their juco or other college credits transfer into UT if they have already taken hours toward the CJ degree they want?

So if he is wanting to RS/ train/ practice and play in 2014 and 2015.....you would not want that? I think that would be an ideal situation since he prob would only play very little this year behind 2 top OTs that will be drafted in a year + Bullard still might be our 3rd best OT if we needed one bc of injury. He might not be willing to RS but if he is I think that is ideal for UT and esp if he is good. Adding a year to train and learn our blocking scheme etc could mean great things not only for us but for his chances at the next level as a lot of OLinemen RS

A statistics course is required that may not be required in a regular criminal justice major other than that my guess is it's not significantly harder. If UT doesn't have a transfer agreement with a juco or any college then how the credits are transferred will be case by case.

That statistics course alone + the lack of a true CJ major could lose a recruit. Add to that UT has said no to transfer credits for various reasons that other SEC schools allowed. We need to fix this thing by the fall semester along with the C- rule

I agree they have to fix C- minus rule, forgein language, transfer credit etc. However I seriously doubt kids are picking schools based on criminal justice degrees. I know there's chatter about that I just don't buy it. There are other equally not as hard majors.

I agree. There is no way he supplants Tiny/James at OT or Bullard as the primary backup. And while the left guard position is open, he's not a guard and Jackson is an former All SEC freshman at that position. Redshirting and having 2 years to play when the O line has become depleted seems to make the most sense. I wouldn't blame him for not wanting to redshirt but it's not like he has many other options.

It's interesting that the staff is high on him but didn't offer while at Cincinnati. Perhaps it's just a matter of numbers at that position.
