Coach Hating Kills Recruiting

  • OK, guys. The latest Wednesday with Wes thread strongly supports something I have believed for a long time. This constant Dooley bashing, when is he going to get fired ish, who's our next coach BS, how hot is Dooley's seat crap, does nothing but hurt recruiting and damage the program and its future.

You are here because you are a recruiting freak, right? You want UT in the Top 10, right? So why do you rip Dooley on the forum recruiting freaks live on? By the way, recruiting freaks include recruits and parents of recruits. Before you deny that, I'll point out that MZTERRY (mother of Jason Croom) posted often here. I got a PM one day from another recruit's father who was concerned about a post. THEY ARE ALL OVER THIS SITE! Just by being here, you are a key spokesperson for the University of Tennessee and your words are read, dissected, and taken into account by decisionmakers. Definition: recruits and their parents.

Hopefully, you guys respect Wes. He is the senior writer here, the bearded wonder, the One With Sources, the guy we listen to. Here is what he said on the subject in the above mentioned WWW Thread:

"Not sure how much it hurts, but I know it doesn't help. Kids are sent emails and texts of the things UT fans say about players on message boards and stuff."

Truly a quote for the ages. Profound.

In his very next post, he elaborated:

"To add to the answer above, I don't know how I — as a recruit or the father of a recruit right now — could ever sign or suggest that my kid sign with a place as vitriolic and hostile as the situation as UT at this point in time. I'm just being honest. I couldn't do it."

OK, so this is the bottom line. If we love UT football, and we want to win, and we want to kick some butt in recruiting, we need to support Coach Dooley. We need to stop trashing him, lay off the negative, support the team and support this coach.

Dave Hart, the Board of Trustees, and the major donors will eventually decide his future. Not us. Meanwhile, let's be fans.

But as a counter-point, I could see a lot of reasons not to go to almost any school or city. Every fan base has their zealots and idiots. It's not like any UT players have been assaulted by fans like at Notre Dame (Clausen) or had their houses TP'd (Murray at Georgia).

Fortunately, my daughter is still a baby (who's 1st birthday is this Saturday). So I guess in the off chance that she grows up to be a division 1 prospect, i have 16 or 17 more years to worry about that.

1-10 in the last 11 SEC games does wonders for recruiting. 0-19 against ranked opponents does wonders for recruiting. 4-14 in the SEC does wonders for recruiting.

This post is the message board equivalent to "sit down and shut up". While I agree with the message you're trying to convey, the point is we have a message board here on this site for people to express themselves. If you don't want people to be able to exchange options, make the site just articles written be the staff and be done with it. People who pay for the right to read AND post here should be allowed too do so as long as they abide by the standards for common courtesy that we all enjoy here.

And as an aside, winning solves everything. The best way for Dooley and crew to silence their critics is to win some games. JMO.

I think he is referring to the OVERLY negative posts. A negative perspective is usually derived from negative results. Understandable, considering the circumstances.
I would not consider, "We are not good this year, and I think Dooley should go" to be overly negative. And after saying that, giving valid, reasonable, and realistic points to back up your opinion. That is what a message board is for. Voicing your opinion. I have read multiple posts basically saying that Dooley should go, that I didn't necessarily agree with, but they made some good points, so I at least respected the post. But when someone just completely ignores the other side of the argument and just spews nothing but toxic nonsense, that is overly negative, and can only hurt the situation.
And I do agree that anyone who pays to be a part of the community should be able to voice their opinion. But you have to at least word it in a way that is not completely void of tact and logic. I have seen some crazy posts in the past four days. Though it is their opinion and they are entitled to it, you have to ask yourself, am I being a part of the problem or the solution ?

  • I agree. If the Vol bashers want something positive to think about just think we might be the nations 13th best team. We lost pretty close games to current nos. 2, 11, and 12 We could lost to Alabama and South Carolina and still be the 13th best team. Not bad for a program in the toilet with hardly any coaches left, players being arrestrd weekly, only around 70 schlorship players and Kiffin trying to take our commitments when Dooley took over. Remember hardly anyone wanted the head coach job because of the condition of the program. Dooley has earned and deserves our support while he rebuildes this program.

  • I agree with Wes that it can't help, but how bad does it really hurt? If a coach is 4-15 in the SEC, aren't these recruits probably already thinking that he might not be around long. I'm sure coaches at other schools are telling them, too.

It hurts a lot IMO. A record is a record, good players believe they can change that. If you are Vonn Bell or Alexander, you can believe that if you come to UT, fix up the secondary, the D will be good next year. But what you don't want to do is go into a program where there is so much toxicity around the program and vitriol from the fans. And saying winning cures that misses the point, players want to go where the fans support them and have their back, not a place that is quickly gathering a rep as a bad place to play (foster gives interviews bashing UT whenever he can, JC death threats, Bray twitter mess...)

I agree that it hurts, but I don't know how badly. It seems like Georgia would have the worst recruiting in the SEC if it were based on negative fans. I honestly don't know. Just trying to see both sides.

  • It doesn't help and it does hurt. TRUST me recruits know whats going on and they are talking.
