Coaching Records and Larry Fedora

  • Here the records of coaches before taking their first job at an SEC program with a similar # of years at a stop (4-5):

Nick Saban: 34-24-1 at Michigan State
Les Miles: 28-21 at Oklahoma State
    Kevin Sumlin: 35-17 at Houston
Larry Fedora: 34-19 at Southern Miss

I think Sumlin's case is the most like Larry Fedora. They were in the same conference at the same time over the same number of year and their records are nearly identical. Who won in the biggest matchup between the two? Fedora. I think people are being too quick to dismiss him as a good candidate.

  • Fedora would be a homerun!

    Welcome!

Side note: you also have to look at the conferences they come from. Much tougher competition inside of the Big 12 and Big 10 than conference usa and the sun belt. However I do agree that some people have probably dismissed him to quickly.

Probably because of all the Gruden talk and the want to hire and proven big name coach that would make a splash....

  • If we don't get Gruden or Butch Davis, I would be OK with Fedora.

  • Jon Gruden 0-0

Think about that - this is college. Jon's postseason in NFL 5-4, and yes, with a Super Bowl in first year at Tampa Bay following Tony Dungy. I keep reminding myself that there are no guarantees in college competition. All the NFL guys are NFL guys right, i.e. players with talent. He has not proven what he can do with college-level talent. I won't be one of the disappointed fans if Gruden is not TN's next HC.

Very good point. Nice way to think about the situation!

  • I am okay with Fedora too. Couldn't hurt with Marquez North either!

  • If you are looking at coaches who came from smaller conferences to the SEC and had success (to feel better about Fedora), Florida may have had one of the most successful in Urban Meyer. He was a combined 39-8 at Bowling Green / Utah before he took the UF job.

I am a Grudenite as much as most others around 247 are for the sheer recognition he would command as our HC. However, should he fall through, there are men who get paid much more than I do do make "educated" decisions on who the best coach for our program should be. I will wait in eager anticipation with the rest of you to see who our new coach will be.

On a side note, living in New Orleans, the local media here did pick up Southern Miss sports from time to time and when Fedora was at Southern Miss he seemed to coach up the talent he had very well as well as bring in a few pretty good recruits considering the means he had to work with and the local competition he had to recruit against.

  • Would be a fantastic hire...
