Is there a rumor we interviewed anyone? Didnt think so.

Haha, so you're upset that there aren't any rumors that UT has interviewed anyone? I'm not trying to be a jerk here, I'm just not sure I understand your real concern. All signs point to UT negotiating with Jon Gruden but you're concerned that we haven't officially interviewed him? Speaking from experience, most executive searches do not include a formal interview process. This is more of a "we know what we're looking for" type of search. Strong has denied that he interviewed at Auburn. Arkansas apparently offered Les Miles and he declined. Doesn't "news" like that hurt a program more than help?

  • Im not satisfied with "All signs point to" anything. If Gruden falls through, what then? The other schools on the market arent waiting to make their wishes known. The complete lack of information is frustrating. Every poster on this board wants solid info, but there has been zero. If you are happy being completely in the dark, more power to you, but I would like to at least know, for a fact, we are making progress. I dont know whats so hard to understand about that.

If we don't know anything, other schools don't know either. That means they aren't going to get into a bidding war with UT because they don't know what Hart is thinking. Hart has basically let everyone else play their hands while he's working behind the scenes to get something done. Strategically, what Hart's doing is much smarter than what either Auburn or Arkansas have done to date in their searches.

  • MaybeI havent articulated this very well, so I will try again. I am not saying Hart is wrong for keeping it hush. I am saying the lack of information from the AD is frustrating to me, and gives the perception that we arent moving forward. Do I think a lot has been done behind the scenes? Ok course. Would I like to know it for a fact? Of course!

I am becoming concerned. We hear about Ark shooting for the stars. We hear Aub is interviewing Strong. We hear crickets out of Knoxville. I dont want to jump the gun, but I just wonder why we are hearing these other programs gunning for big name coaches, and we hear nothing from UT. From a perception stand point, we look like the weakest link. Is that the reality? Who knows. What I do know is in the court of public oppinion, we are getting are asses kicked, like Dooley at Vanderbilt. It's time to show the college football world we are serious about taking our rightful place in the SEC, and the perception is we havent even interviewed anyone yet! Im normally optimistic, but my glass is half empty right now. Somebody please stand up and take the bull by the horns!

One program has a spit wad philosophy and ours is more of a sniper philosophy. One has been rebuffed the other is still waiting for it's shot. Images change daily so what your perception of our image is today can change in a matter of hours or minutes. I personally like my analogy. In fact I just patted myself on the back. lolJust being funny but I think it is a valid point.

Let's see... they had a meeting set up with Jon Gruden today. Is that "shooting for the stars" enough for you? Your (our) perception of how Hart is handling this has no bearing on what is actually going on here. He's not giving details for a reason. In the end, he'll be judged on whether or not he hired a successful coach not on whether or not he kept fans apprised of the search. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

I like it too, I just want a bullseye, and not a miss! My perception will change immediately once this is all over. I hope it changes to eternal optimism, and not here we go again

  • It does not give the perception of stagnancy at all. Do you really think the UT AD is sitting around doing nothing right now? Honestly, do you want them to hold a press conference accouncing the list of candidates they are going after? Should they be sending out polls to the fans about who they should hire and how much they shold pay?

I don't understand what you are looking for. Arky getting used by Les Miles to get a pay increase made them look silly. Auburn interviewing Strong only looks good if he leaves Louisville for Auburn, and even if he does, is that really shooting for the starts?

    bavw

  • I posted the same thing the other night. Arkansas was winning the "coach search" because they were demonstrating that they think their job is second to none by offering Miles.while we have crickets to listen to here.

I will say this for the 400th and last time. Im sure a lot is going on behind the scenes. No, I dont want a poll or any other of you condescending suggestions. I would like some factual information about the direction of this search, instead of the pure speculation we are being fed.

You guys are putting words in my mouth. I never said I wanted a play by play, or to let the entire office know who I am interviewing. I said I would like TANGIBLE evidence the process is moving forward. In the office, when there is an opening, you at least know somebody is being interviewed even though you may not know who. We dont even know that.

^^^^That wasn't my intent. IMO, the difference here compared to the office is that office position openings aren't broadcast all over TV, internet, and radio and unless it is a high profile Fortune 500 company, the candidates are just other people entering the business. The person interviewing at 4:00 PM isn't going to know who was there at 9:00 AM and get upset because his/her interview wasn't first. I get your point BOB, but I feel more comfortable with this search than I did with the one that produced Dooley.

I have to disagree with you on providing information. Trust me when I say that having private information is power in any negotiation. It allows you to shape the perception when it counts most and that is when the deal is done. As for the speculation we are not 'being fed speculation' we are cooking it up our selves.

I agree. I think Vol fans everywhere have anxiety about the search because of the way the last two searches have ended. I guess my point is that we should all relax a little, be patient and see who is hired before we work ourselves into a frenzy over perception. I'm not saying blind faith in Hart or anything else, just that we have to rely on those in charge (whether Hart or boosters) to bring in the right guy. Once we see the end result we can worry about the perception of the program.

  • Here is my take on the silence outta Knoxville. Gruden is OURS, at least until he isnt. Remember Hamiltons handling of the last two Coaches? We had info everywhere on this coach or that who said NO Thanks. That's not happening this time. We are in the Drivers seat this time and I think Hart, as maddening as it is, is doing the RIGHT thing. He will make public what he can when the ink is dry on the paperwork. until then nothing is official and nothign should be said. I DO wish it was done already, but at the same time I prefer it to take another 2 weeks if necessary to make the RIGHT hire.

I apologize for my tone, crazy day at work and no place for it.

I just disagree with this notion that 'noise' around the coach search is a good or bad thing. If we are going after Gruden, why make a ton of noise about it? If we want Fisher or Strong, who benefits from fans hearing rumors abour our pursuit?

I understand as a fan wanting to know what is going on. I don't understand as a fan thinking that you knowing what is going on is in anyway beneficial for the process.

The best advice I can give is to just let things roll off your back during this search. The first tangible news we probably get will be right before we actually hire our next coach. Every fanbase has to deal with this same exact "problem" during any coaching search.

Penn State guy here...it is not a bad thing you guys are not hearing what is going on, because there is a lot I am sure going on behind the scenes and it is better to let it play out that way. We had this last year when EVERYONE was rumored to be targeted for the PSU coaching position...there was a lot of smoke and misinformation out in the media...I think you will emerge with a strong coaching candidate and will be happy with it. Arkansas now has egg on their face because they have been rebuffed atleast twice it sounds like...The analysts will just take the top 8 names and say that they are targets for all the SEC schools, but in realty how many would fit the program culture, etc. at each school.

It would he a heck of a get for Gruden and hope you end up with who you want.

+1 for a classy post. I am not being classy when I say I would love to take your coach away from you.lol

  • And the flood gates open... Ever heard the saying "Be careful what you wish for, cause you just might get it"? I guess Big G is off the table, and now the rumors are flying... I woulda traded a few more days of quiet to get the coach we needed. Damn.

  • Saw rumor floating around about a press conference tomorrow. What are they going to announce?
