Coaching ? for board

  • If UT can't land a "big name" or "home-run" hire, would you be happy with a guy like Dave Doeren, former Wisconsin DC and head coach at Northern Illinois. He has a 20-4 record at NIU and he's a younger guy. Who are your "under the radar" guys that you would be happy with? Not talking big names here.

  • I think that ultimately, this is the kind of coach we are more likely to end up with. I know that Tennessee fans THINK that Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden, and Lovie Smith will be clamoring for the job, but the reality is that we will probably be looking more for an Urban Meyer from Utah kind of hire.

I don't think that a "splash" hire is a necessity. My criteria is this:

1 - A HC. Don't want a coordinator, no matter how successful. Just because I can lay bricks doesn't mean I can manage a construction site.

2 - A winning history. The coach should have won the games he was supposed to and been competitive in or won games he was not supposed to.

3 - A fit. I want someone that buys into Tennessee's history and tradition and sees it as a destination job.

I can't list you the kind of folks that are under the radar. I couldn't even pronounce "Cuonzo" when we hired Coach Martin, but I believe it was a home run hire, even though it wasn't a splash. Good thread, and I look forward to seeing what kinds of names in this category people might throw out. Again, I think this is more than likely the kind of hire we are looking at, anyway.

+1. I completely agree and this is why I wanted to discuss this.
