Great work Wes. I just hope we do not go to Kirby Smart route.

Me to. That's the last thing we need is another sorry sabon assistant.

Agree. That coaching tree is full of nothing but poison fruit.

  • I'm just interested in why it seems like everybody is so in love with Gruden? I personally think it would be a very bad hire. He hasn't coached in years and hasn't coached in college in even longer. So that means he has no recruiting ties and it's a known fact he doesn't like coaching young people. Whoever we hire needs to be a proven coach at the sec level and they need to at least have been a coordinator. I hope Hart throws the money issue out the window and hires a solid coach that will right this ship cause the last 5 years have sucked.

Forgive me for not understanding all of this Kirby Smart hate. Smart is probably the best proven recruiter on this list. He is the lead recruiter for Bama in all bit name. Nick Saban has made it clear Smart doesn’t get enough credit for the Tide’s defense, and he has 2 NC rings and a defensive scheme with proven success.

The "never been a head coach before" argument holds little weight with me as well. Jimbo Fisher, Pat Fitzgerald, Charlie Strong. Will Muschamp, James Franklin, Dana Holgorsen, Dabo Swinney, ALL first time head coaches previously coordinators doing pretty well.

    Just some things to consider.

  • If Arkansas gets Gruden, heads need to roll and Dooley should have company on his way out the door.

  • Why not add Bob Stoops to the list? Might want to come back to the best conference in football.

And please no soppy interviews with Fulmer about how things would be different if he had remained head coach....he was the main author of this train wreck. Not exactly at the top of many coaching searches!

Sonny Dykes? You're messing with us. I like how you nonchalantly slipped that in there.

He's highly regarded and has been mentioned a lot on the hot coaches lists. But obviously, Tennessee fans could not handle another La Techer at this time.

  • Anyone heard anything about Jon Chavis? I've heard he doesn't aspire to be a head coach, but has anyone heard anything different? Also, how old is he?

  • interesting to me that Franklin is not on the list...just kicked our butts with lesser talent. He can recruit and coach.. And I assume he would be interested in moving up to a D1 school.

  • That's simply incorrect about Fisher and FSU's facilities.

FSU is breaking ground on the IPF in 2 weeks. The new dorms are breaking ground this year and there is $32 million in upgrades to the stadium proposed for the offseason.

I can tell you why. He's a rock star. He would be an instant shot on the arm for this program. The real question is: Will it be best long term. That, I don't know. I don't think anyone would argue that a Gruden hire would not instantly benefit recruiting in a big way. I worry more about the assistant hires more than anything. I say Gruden is the best choice just because there will be quality coaches and players that will follow. JMO. Plus, he does have some ties to the program.

  • Why don't we just discontinue football at Tennessee ? There would no longer be long periods of lows and a short period of highs every 4-5 years. Life would be on a more even keel. Ha Ha

If we got him, every team in the conference but one would immediately sit up and say "damn". We immediately have almost any recruit's ear in the country and we shoot right to the top of every headline in the country - this time for a good reason. It's really hard to overestimate his appeal. UT would also pick up millions of bandwagon fans that are just fans of his - lots of revenue. It's the best hire we could make by a mile. But I don't think he comes to the college game

  • Doug Marrone at Syracuse? Dave Hart's home would be vandalized with that hire

  • The two that most intrigue me is Larry Fedora and Doug Marrone.

Good stuff! Question about Fisher - why do you think he'd possibly favor Auburn over UT? Also- how likely is it that Chizik will be fired? I know the buyout for Auburn's current staff is much greater than UT's....

His wife went to Auburn, he was an assistant there and he knows a lot of their boosters.

  • Bill O'Brien at Penn State was asked yesterday if he was going to return as the Nittany Lions coach and he said "he was concentrating on next weeks game" When asked again to answer yes or no to the question, he wouldn't give an answer. Don't know if he would make a good SEC coach, but you have to give him credit for doing a decent job after a real shakey start and under real bad circumstances.

He has his eyes on an NFL job and NFL execs have their eyes on him. He's not coming to UT.

He might be in play in the NFL. He's a NFL guy.

  • Sounds like no coordinator. Also he has said nothing that would infer Gruden is a candidate outside of the stuff we've previously known.
