Coaching search: Sunday updates

  • No Gundy!!!! So what if he had been voted into the NC last year. He would have gotten blown out. No Gundy team has ever played defense and we all know what that gets you in the SEC. Strong, Strong, Strong......I will be disappointed if its anyone else at this point.

Yep, and I think that's one reason Hart is interviewing Gundy ASAP. If Mack leaves then Gundy goes to Austin. I keep telling people that if OSU gets six more votes in the poll last year then they play LSU for the NC instead of Bama. And then people's perception of him would be entirely different.

my perception would not be different. you are wrong on that RunThruTheT.
Gundy is Dooley Re-Do. all offense and no defense. Let Texas have him...please take him.

  • Also, considering Texas's defensive troubles this year, I find it laughable that they would want Gundy. If Brown leaves, expect Texas to throw an obnoxious amount of money at Nick Saban, and I wouldn't be surprised if he bolted. New challenge, and he'd love the chance to win a national championship at three different schools.

Has anyone pursued the possibility of Shaw? Longshot I know, but would definitely be a great hire IMO.

don't know that he would fit in the SEC (he is a west coast guy all the way) and unsure about recruiting. but the dude can flat out coach.

  • Just looked at Hookem board and it seems like that fans aren't happy with Brown but it seems that Manny Diaz being replaced is more of a possibility though. Kevin, is this accurate or are you hearing anything?

I know some definitive information about this as the QB who replaced Reid's father is a close friend. Remember Reid was replaced and that is what prompted all this. Reid was not happy he was replaced and frankly Gundy should have done it sooner.

Gundy's press conference and rant I can promise you was certainly not fake. The reporter is a girl who is not very well respected and he lit her up. Reid was also the guy whose mother delivered him her chicken for every game instead of the others pregame meal. He was coddled. Let me tell you if you don't hire him I know for 1000% fact he is at the top of Texas list.

He is a better candidate than Strong or Fisher but they all 3 are about equal.

I ended my post with "take it for what it is worth" because I realize that I have no way of verifying Reid's statements. My hope was to show a point of point that is rarely discussed, the player's. Right or wrong Reid felt that Gundy really screwed him. As i noted in the OP, that should at least give volfans pause. That said, I think you are right in believing that Gundy would be near the top of Texas's wish list but Texas does not play in the SEC. This is not to say that Texas/Big 12 coaches are of lesser quality than their SEC counterparts but there is no denying the differences in the type of ball played in each conference. I remain convinced that a one-dimension, offense-first team cannot achieve long-term success in the SEC. Gundy concerns me for several reasons but chief among those is his offense-first mentality/coaching style. This season showed that you cannot rely on outscoring your opponents in the SEC. The ALs, FLs, and GAs are just too talented to let that happen. He is a good coach, just not for Tennessee. JMO

I get the feeling that many ppl don't know the back story behind Gundy's rant. I have attached an article by ESPN on the subject. I felt that it is relavent to the search. The article is lengthy but informative. In short, Bobby Reid, the player Gundy was "defending," felt that Gundy's rant was fake; a mere PR performance. "That it was all a big show. It didn't feel genuine." He went on to say that he believed that the comments within the article, which sparked the rant, came indirectly from Gundy or his staff. At the very least, the background behind the "I'm a man" story should give vol fans pause. TFWIW...

Just read the article, and it makes me appreciate Gundy even more. Pretty obvious he got beaten out/recruited over and He and his mother held a grudge.

  • I like Strong the best if he keeps our offensive staff, but I also like Fisher or Gundy if they can make a big DC hire like Chizik or Kevin Steele. For that matter, I would be over the moon if Strong was hired, kept the offensive staff and then hired Chizik or Kevin Steele as DC! Is that the most realistic possibility? Probably not, but the point is that any of the coaches can be homeruns based on who they are plus who they hire as their coordinatoors.

  • I can be happy with Fisher, I can be happy with Gundy, and I can be happy with Strong,Fedora or even Golden, but I CAN'T get excited about Jones. No way in hell that they hire Jones over any of the guys I mentioned above. Just can't, no way!

My take from reading the article is that Bobby Reid was basically a baby and should have been grateful to Mike Gundy for not only giving him a chance, but also for standing up for him during that press conference. Check back to Matt Simms. I'm sure he was privately questioning why he worked his tail off and then got benched for a primadonna, but we never heard any public complaint from him. To me, this article reflects more negatively on Reid than it does Mike Gundy. Thanks for the link to the article, it was a good read.

Go back and watch the rant. Gundy is talking about a player who "drops a pass".

Then read the article about Reid, who is a QB.

The two do not fit together. Be careful of jumping on a bandwagon because of something written by a journalist whose job is hinged to what is written, especially when the article is one-sided. That article is angled completely from Reid's and the journalist's side, as if both were victims of Gundy.

I agree. Saban has publicly stated that he enjoys building a team more so than trying to maintain one. It would probably take a load of cash to pull him away from Bama, but he could be bought. He has no more ties to Bama than he did LSU. If what he sees as a better opportunity comes along, he'll bolt.

  • Kevin, I might be over-reacting, but from this update it seems like we've given up on Strong. Is that true? If so, I'd be really disappointed.

Volbol, you are the one that is mistaken. The rant was about Bobby Reid and there is no denying that. What's more, I was not "jumping on the bandwagon." As my post above states, I was simply showing the board a different angle on one of the most infamous rant of all time. "Be careful" about calling out other posters when you don’t have your facts straight. SMH!!!

why would Saben leave Alabama for Texas? that is crazy to think that could ever have a chance. never happen. if Saben leaves for Texas it will be to coach the Dallas Cowboys not the Texas Longhorns. if you think Saben would leave for Texas in order to win a NC at 3 different schools....no way. how about the challenge to fix the Dallas Cowboys? I might could buy some of that.

  • I really would like to know who keeps positioning Golden and Jones' names into the mix. It has to be coming from their camps as Hart and company have to know that they would be 2 very unpopular hires if made. They would have a smaller leash than Dooley ever had and will be set up to fail with the fans from Day 1.

    GoVols2011

  • I think Strong lands the 4 and 5 star recruits that we need in this class. His defenses at UF we very good. His history in the SEC brings much to the table . Rest assured the kids in the rich recruiting grounds in Fla and Ga know him. He's the guy while at FLA came into NC and established FLA as a player with every 4 and 5 star defensive recruit in this state.

Shaw isn't really a candidate because from what I gather, he's at his dream job. We've talked about it a few times on the board, but I can't remember exactly why most of us started to remove him from conversation.

    InVols

  • If Mack Brown is out at Texas, which is a BIG "if", and we are still looking, would he be in play for us..? Just throwing it out there.. Not sure how i would feel about Mack Brown as a potential candidate for the Vols.

  • I think we should go after Saban. If nothing else, force Bama to pay more money.

i answered this on another thread and, as i understand it, Shaw is a Stanford lifer. He graduated from Stanford, was there OC for four years and now the HC. He's not leaving Palo Alto. He's a heckuva coach though.

A middle aged white guy looking for a "safe" hire looks for other MAWGs who have had "success" in previous head coaching experience. Does anybody really think that Fisher, Gundy, Golden, etc... bring anything to the table that would enable them to compete for SEC championships? The UT job is where "good" coaches go to die. We need exceptional and to find that requires a certain amount of risk and faith in the potential of a candidate who's not yet had the opportunity to compete and recruit at the level needed for us to get back to conference and national relevance, see Ron Franklin. Strong is the only one on the current list that gives us an immediate surge in recruiting and wether or not he can really coach at the highest level is still in front of him. If not Strong I hope Hart has the courage to think outside the box instead of going "safe." If not I'm afraid we'll be faceing another stretch of mediocrity or worse, though I hope I'm wrong. As a middle aged white guy I'm starting to wonder how many seasons I have left. Go Big Orange!

Some of your comments make a lot of sense but, how does the "middle aged white guy" thing really fit into this? Did I miss something? or are you implying something instead of just coming out and saying it?

    Somebody help me out here.
