Okay...but if he gets fired or let go, then doesnt really matter that he USED to be the highest paid coach at the highest revenue producing athletic department. He would be unemployed at that point. And maybe your view of "nearing retirment" is different than mine, but he's 61. I'd say he has some more years in the tank. He's a Tennessee native, and has spent his entire coaching career in the south. Maybe he'd like the opportunity at this point in his career to bring his home state school back to prominence. Im not taking a side, just saying it might be more plausible than you suggest.

I understand your point, but it's just not sensible: what coach is going to step down and take a job that would probably pay him $1.5 million LESS per year? He has a market value of $5+ million, and that's what kind of salary he would demand. And to your point, he's 61. I don't think paying a 61 year old coach that kind of money would fly with anyone here.

And considering that Muschamp was the 'coach-in-waiting' it's safe to say that retirement was in Brown's near future. Remember that was one of the reasons that Muschamp took the UF job; because Brown didn't retire.

I see all the dots you're connecting, but nothing about that scenario makes any sense for either side involved. The main candidates have all already been identified and discussed at length by the W/R/K. Anyone else is just chatter.

I am not a Gundy fan, nor am I a fan of Butch Jones for the UT job (even though he's done a good job at UC). All the rest--Fedora included--seem like good gets. Good update, Kevin. Are the commits still hanging in there? Another question--the coaching candidates don't see the campus & facilities before accepting? Are they shown a Powerpoint presentation featuring the facilities during their (non)interviews?

Ryan has talked to most of the commits and they are hanging in there. Imagine they are waiting to see who gets hired and go there from there.

Butch Davis would do better than either Fisher or Gundy.

  • I really like Butch Jones. I am curious as to why you aren't a fan? I think he's a great coach. No ties to the South necessarily, but I don't think kids care as long as they know he wins ball games. D'Antonio won at UC and than at MSU, Kelly won at UC and than at ND, there's no reason to think Jones won at UC and wouldn't win at UT.

Really like Butch Jones. Really like Gus Malzahn. Really like Strong. Really liked Doeren. Like Gundy. Like Mullen. Don't mind Fedora. Lukewarm on Golden. Hate Fisher.

Fair or not, the feeling with Butch Jones is that if Dooley beat you, you don't deserve to replace him as UT's head coach. He may be a good coach, but if he's hired, he's got a steep hill to climb before fans will really believe in him. And he won't often get the benefit of the doubt when we lose.

Agree with you on Fisher. Tennessee does NOT need another coach who's resume includes a history of bad losses to Florida.

I do like Gundy, although I don't like our chances of winning a bidding war against T. Boone Pickens. The more time goes by, the more I'm convinced we're going to end up with Charlie Strong, who generates zero excitement with me.

And a final word on Gruden: does anybody else out there question why Hart never bothered to contact this guy until three days ago? While I'm fairly sure Haslam met with him in early November, why is Hart just now getting around to contacting the guy? Did he have something more important to do, like rake leaves at his house? I'm starting to wonder if we didn't do enough house cleaning two weeks ago.
