Coaching search: The stock report

Now that we are more than a week into the UT coaching search, we have thrown tons of information at you. To help you sort through it, here is our search stock report.

  • Great work Kevin, it seems to me the longer this goes on the less Gruden will come to coach here, I just have this crazy feeling we will end up with a lower tier coach due to no one wanting to come or can't afford them. I would love to see Gruden but it's a fantasy in most eyes and I don't see Hart letting Gruden do as he pleases. I still don't think Strong is the answer either , he may be able to recruit but coaching is the ? Golden not a splash hire but maybe that is what we need a consistent recruiter who can coach. Ever who ends up here I will fully support but just like Dooley if they don't win within 3 to 4 years we will be right back where we are now. That is why I would prefer an experienced HC of many years not some hot prospect on the horizon. Not getting off the topic but I hear Auburn is going after Kirby Smart wouldn't that be a laugh taking from your worst enemy

  • Nice summary, Kevin. We needed a road map to keep us from getting lost in all this.

  • Kevin I heard something really questionable yesterday on ESPNU broadcast they were rating the college jobs available and to my surprise the Arkansas job to those guys was better than Tennessee due to recruiting areas and facilities just wondering your thoughts. I know many people have different outlooks on things but I thought we were one of the top ten jobs in America

  • Fulmer?

Listen, I was ready for him to go. Ready for a change. And we sure as h*ll got plenty of change!

But why is he not consdiered? Just because he is part of our tragic, recent past and nobody can stomach it again?

I'm not advocating it, but curious for your thoughts Kevin.

  • I loved Phil and yes he got lazy and content but a bad year for Phil was 8 wins since he left how many times have we seen 8 wins? But he will not be considered for this job but he should. One thing about some Vol fans when Phil was winning 10 or 11 every year he was great as soon as he lost four in a season oh he has to go some fans truthfully aren't loyal to a coach people can get mad but it is the truth

  • My second favorite college team is UC, and I have friends in Cincinnati. At this point, I am hoping we do not hire Butch Jones. There are a few subjective reasons, such as people I trust telling me he does not have a lot of personal charisma or presence in a room (the anti-Brian Kelly). There is an interesting story, though, involving the departure from UC of associate head coach Kerry Coombs to OSU to join Urban's staff that bears scrutiny. Coombs went up to Columbus & talked to the OSU staff & came back to Cincinnati. He told Butch Jones that he had an offer and was thinking about it. Jones told Coombs something to the effect of "you can't go-you'll be the head coach when I leave" while telling UC fans that UC was a destination job and that he would be staying for a long time. Coombs told Jones he wasn't sure what he was going to do, as Coombs had strong ties to the Cincinnati community by virtue of having been a long time high school coach in the area (& a successful one). Jones then apparently fired Coombs, making the decision easy. Here is a link to what people who were trying to read the tea leaves were concluding at the time: http://bearcatsnation.com/2012/03/01/coach-kerry-coombs-appears-to-be-headed-to-ohio-state/ Maybe there isn't anything wrong with what Jones did here, but it feels wrong to me. Coaches are usually supportive of their assistants moving up and succeeding. It makes me suspicious of Jones, both in terms of how he treats people and whether you can believe anything he says. Pass.

  • What's your thoughts on Tuberville? He's poking around the SEC apparently and I personally wouldn't object to him as HC. We know he can win in the SEC.

  • Great job guys. I am thankful for your insight and consistancy. Keep up the good work. Oh yeah, please tell Coach Gruden (if u can) come to Tennessee. We would greatly appreciate it. I believe he and his staff could do great things in Big Orange Country. Go Vols!!!!

  • Thanks Mr. Ryan - great info. I'm still hearing rumblings through the folks that I know on campus that we could possibly expect an announcement as early as next week. Several folks that I know in the upper echelon of donations are still saying that it's Gruden. It's a matter of working out some of the "power struggles"...for what it's worth.

  • I heard that the Auburn 247 guys said that Gruden is our #1 target and Bill O'Brien is our backup plan. I know Wes said that hadn't heard O'Briens name come up in any conversations he's had... Any possible truth to what the Auburn guys are saying?

According to an article from Rucker last night O'Brien's buyout is 18 million so I am pretty sure that is not going to happen!

  • O'Brien's buyout is currently $9.2 million. I know we gots cash, but do we want to go that far on the front end, really?

    TNRacedoc

  • Thanks for all the great info you guys are providing.

I'm one of those who feels like it's a major longshot for Gruden, so I've pretty much scratched him off my own list at this time. However, I'm envisioning this fan base going absolutely ape **** if we were to hire Butch Jones. The biggest detractor is, obviously, Dooley beat him. Soundly. Other than that, he's not really done anything else impressive and plays in a weak league. I'm wanting to give Hart benefit of the doubt here because this hire will essentially establish his legacy here at UT, and I don't think he can afford to pull the trigger for Jones. At least--I hope not.

  • Ryan, can you shed light on why we are not hearing anything on Jeff Fisher? Seems I saw his name early on, then he dropped off the radar screen. Wouldn't he rate right up there or even higher in some regards as Gruden and Mora Jr. regarding NFL experience and success? I would think his connection to Tennessee via Nashville and the Titans should be enough to drive some serious conversations.

Go Big Orange!...I'll hang up and listen to your comments....

I had the same thought and looked up what he is making with the Rams. From what I could find, he is making in the $7 million range.

I think most around the program feel that UT needs to move forward, not go back to the future.

He was let go for a reason, and schools didn't exactly beat down his door over the last few years despite his interest in a few jobs.

Maybe he asked for too much in those situations, but I think it's telling that he hasn't coached again.

Exactly right on Phil. +1 for a very concise update.

I think Fisher makes over $6 million a year..., and if he went anywhere in college it'd be USCw IMO.
