Comment from TOS on ball personnel tonight

  • Said tenn starting line up tonight is the least recruited starting five in the history of Tennessee basketball. I agree 100%.

Yuk at tenn ball right now. Way too many mid major guys on this team.

What say you Wes. I'm glad to see TOS call it like it is. Too many times the local media calls it way after the fact and someone is getting fired,

You don't hang with UK, Florida and others with this group of players. Counzo learning on the job like Dooley did.

    Tell me where I'm wrong.

  • I agree partly, but he also recruited to put his system in place first with gritty, defensive minded guys. Now he has his base and will start getting others to help on offense.

You hit on partly what I don't like....the system. I've never laid in bed and dreamed of playing big 10, gene Katy basketball.

It needs to get a lot better next year or Hart will be on his second major search.

Oh I agree, I hate that slowed down motion offense. Run some sets sometimes. The biggest peeve of mine is the way the point guard has always given the ball up when they get across half court it was the same at the end of the Pearl era too.

  • I know nothing about BBall but with 2 min in the game they are beating a team that has went to the sweet sixteen the last 4 years.

Cuanzo is getting four years. The team over achieved last year, they play very good D, he inherited a mess, and Maymon being out really hurts.

Wrong if we miss the tourney again this year, CCM will be on the hot seat next year. The whole team has regressed this year.

  • Defense wins championships. This team is what? 8-3? Without it's best player in Maymon

Mcbee and Richardson were only two not highly recruited and Richardson had some solid offers to choose from. So I would say your incorrect. Trae, hall and stokes were 4 and 5 star recruits. Maymon who should be starting was a big time recruit

+1, and Richardson was key in the win tonight. When McBee is on, errbody loves him...

    A. Last year we were projected to finish last in the SEC, so he surpassed expectations in year 1.
    B. This years team plays hard, plays good D, and doesn't have quality guards. If Maymon misses the whole year he will get the benefit of the doubt.
    C. Oklahoma St and Gtown are ranked, not exactly bad losses.

  • To me if what the person/people on TOS are saying is true then Coach Martin is getting the most out of a talent deficient bunch isn't he?

Who wouldn't prefer some more O, a few tomahawk dunks, and a flurry of 3 or 4 made 3 pointers in a row ala Lofton/Smith fame but the bottom line is we are winning. Ugly wins are a whole lot better than high scoring losses.

IT TAKES NO TALENT TO HUSTLE

I'll tell you where you are wrong:

    1) TOS "calling it like they see it" does not mean they said this is a bad team. Whether it is the least recruited 5 in UT history does not matter. What matters is are they getting results. 8-3 with a couple of top 25 RPI wins (Wichita St. and UMass) and another top 100 win (Xavier), with no bad losses are some decent results.

    2) This team DID hang with UK and Florida. If you recall, they beat Florida twice last year and came closer to beating UK than any other SEC team except Vandy in the SEC championship game.

So..... what's your point? Oh I see, you wrote this post in the middle of the game. Next time wait until it's over and you see who wins before drawing ridiculous conclusions and accusing Wes of being too soft on Cuonzo.

On this date last year, UT was 8-6 with losses to Duke, Memphis, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Austin Peay, and College of Charleston. This year minus Maymon they are 9-3 with losses to Oklahoma State, Georgetown, and Virginia. That's a better record with losses to quality opponents instead of 3-4 "WTH?" losses. Not sure how that qualifies as "regression"...

    A. We missed the tourney for the first time in six years so NO we didn't exceed anything.
    B. Doesn't change the fact this team has refressed from last year.
    C. If we don't make the tourney this year CCM most certainly will be on the hot seat next year.

I guess you haven't watched too much Tennessee Basketball. There were some pretty stagnant O'Neil teams, and Jerry Green just rolled the ball out on the court. Wade Houston, I won't even go there. That being said, I'm not goin to be responding to your comments on basketball until I see something slightly accurate. Don't feed the trolls!

Man, you kill me with the Cuonzo hate. Regarding your points:

    A) We absolutely exceeded expectations last year. If making or missing the tournament is your only measuring stick for evaluating a team, I'm not sure we can have a logical discussion about this.
    B) Regressed from what? The results to this point in the season are much better than one year ago. If you're comparing to how we ended the season, then it's possible we're not playing at the same level. But we're missing our best player so that will be taken in to consideration.
    C) See point A. Hart is not going to look only at whether or not we made the tournament in deciding what to do with Cuonzo. You're opinion that he is failing is the VERY small minority at this point, and it's going to take a disaster to get the fan base to call for his head the way we were calling for Dooley's at the end. Unless we finish in the bottom 3rd of the SEC and don't make any postseason tourny's absolutely zero chance he is on the hot seat.

Tennessee was picked to finish 11th in the SEC last year. What place did they end up finishing? You probably don't know so ill tell you. Tennessee finished 2nd. Do some simple research before spouting off.

How can you honestly say that a team picked to finish 11th in the SEC in the preseason is somehow expected to make the NCAA Tournament at the same time? Based on preseason projections, UT wouldn't have even made the NIT, let alone the NCAA Tournament last year.

Since when were preseason projections the gospel. That the entire premise of your argument and of course those preseason predictions didn't include us picking up stokes. Even so, we didn't make the and lot to Mtsu in the NIT.

Zo didn't takeover for buzz, he inherited a program that had gone to four straight NCAA tourneys and was a pt away from the final four two years ago.

I've not written off Zo yet, but I'm certainly less than impressed and I'm positive I'm more qualified to comment on the situation than 99% of this board.

If you were more qualified than 99% of this board you would know that this program had been to six straight NCAA tournaments when Cuonzo took over, not four.
