Agree on the quality thing - how many scholly players do we have considering there are about ZERO left from Kiffin's class(or lack thereof)? I agree that the quality of our depth isn't what others have but feel headway is being made. I saw an offense that became so predictable with the play-calling and a defense that made a lot of mistakes. It seems Chaney's play calling doesn't have a lot of creativity to use the talent we have. I was disappointed with no use of out little fast guys(Devrin & Quesshaun) the way FL used theirs. I don't have a problem with the Mustang package, good use of it. It seemed like it was slant to Hunter, slant to CP; let's throw in Rogers, oh a slant, for good measure. Three receptions by Rivera and he disappears from the play calling after that.

I just don't bother complaining about play-calling because it isn't going to change. Chaney is a pass heavy guy, hes not going to change. It doesn't win in this league, physical football wins, our O-line plays like fairys.

  • Top picks to replace Dooley:
    (1) Jon Gruden -- I know, I know but we can dream right?
    (2) Bill Cower
    (3) Jon Chavis
    (4) Chris Peterson
    (5) Kirby Smart
    (6) Gus Mahlzan
    Any other ideas?

AJ Johnson wouldn't start on UGA's team, they didn't need him. I don't think there is 1 player on our defense that would start on UGA, maybe Couch or Sentimore...

And if you followed his recruitment, he would've went to Florida if they were going to let him play LB, but they recruited him at DE.

The point was not whether he would start, but did CDD and staff evaluate him as a talent. He was All SEC as a freshman, right. Whether he would start is neither here nor there. From most of your posts I don't think you believe anyone can evaluate talent like you can, or coach for that matter.

Last year we played for one half a game. Last night we almost made three quarters. That's the only progress I saw.

That is progress, though. Painful progress, but progress.

I'm not sure it's progress. In both cases, we fell apart when we fell behind. It just took us longer than usual to fall behind last night. Well, maybe that is a little progress...

    Whoa, whoa, whoa...

A.J. Johnson wouldn't start for Georgia?

    Seriously?

Have you any idea how good that kid is at football?

Why do people assume change is better?

Players leave. Program gets set back another couple of years.

The ONLY reason to make a change would be the presence of a candidate who made a ton of money and couldn't possibly fail.

I think continuity is what the program needs, more than anything. I really do believe that. JMO.

And don't pretend I'm doing anything to support Dooley. Coaching changes are great for our business here. But I don't think that would be the best thing for the Tennessee program in this situation. JMO.

  • I don't think the team gave up as early as some seem to believe. I do think the anxiousness to grab back the lead once the game was tied was a huge mistake. It was panicky and insecure and unnecessary. I thought that was a very bad omen. First down of the first possession after it was tied: a pass play where everyone seemed jumpy and anxious and desperate to regain the lead immediately. That's the first time I've seen Bray not look confident.

Anyway, I do think before this season is over it will come out that Florida is much better than 18th in the country. This is a team that really loaded up with big-time talent and has been for a few years now. They haven't performed well overall the past two seasons, but they've had the horses and have just been under-performing. Now their coaching is ironed out and they are hitting a groove as a team. I'll be very surprised if they don't win out in the east.

  • Wes, could change be worse? We are at a point where Tennessee EXPECTS to have 5-6 losses per season. Simply reaching a bowl game is considered a great "achievement." How far a cry is that from the '80's, '90's, and first half of the 2000's. We KNOW we can have better with the right coach. If Florida can have better, WE can have better. If Alabama can have better, WE can have better. If Michigan can have better, WE can have better. if Notre Dame can have better, WE can have better. We CAN have better at Tennessee, but NOT with Derek Dooley. He has proven that over 3 seasons. Michigan learned after 3 seasons of Rodriguez, Florida learned after 3 seasons of Ron Zook, and Alabama learned after 4 seasons of Mike Shula. Dooley is in his 3rd season. He lost a HUGE winnable game at home to a mediocre Florida team on national television. Unless he beats Georgia AND South Carolina OR Alabama, I don't see how the university (whose AD is losing $5M a year and will surely not be helped by all the empty stands for the Akron Zips) can justify retaining such a failure of a coach.

I love the vols and I love our coaches but it's hard not to think a change might needed. Chaney is one of my favorites but I can't help but think the inability to rush is not a player problem but scheme problem.

Cheney does make one or two bone-head calls occasionally.

  • Good article. Sooner than latter I'm going to talk my wife out of getting season tixs she is all caught up in the hype I guess it reminds her of here college days with hope that one of the grands will also be a VOL. when one adds up all the cost to attend a game you realize that you can be bett Eric entertained with a lot less. Donation, tickets, travel from out of state it becomes ridicules.

I agree that we don't want to go through a situation similar to the post Gene Stallings Alabama or post Lou Holtz Notre Dame where we bounce from mediocre coach to mediocre coach for 10 years before we find the right guy. But sometimes you just have to take the risk if something is clearly wrong.

Given the way Dooley's teams wilt when the chips are down, and the way Dooley's coaching staffs fail to make in-game and halftime adjustments, I am willing to take a chance on a new head coach that can provide those things. Otherwise, the new refrain from the Tennessee faithful will be like the one heard for years at that private school in Nashville: "Same ol' Volunteers."
