Commentary: Was this it for Dooley?

This one can’t be explained. Of all the things going through my mind after UT's latest loss, none of them top those five words. So here are three more words: Was this it?

  • After having to watch that from the stands today, I do not see how you don't pull the plug. Retain Graham and Pittman.

  • Great article. It took this game and the decisons of the head coach to finally convince me that Dooley must go. We don't have a choice, at least if we ever want to have a respectful progam again. It will probably take at least 3 yrs. now. Sad to see Him go but it is a necessity.

  • One word......yes! What's your opinion Wes?

  • Thanks for posting that commentary, Wes. It reflects my feeling that to NOT do a change now is unforgivable. Your poignant point is "That was a stunningly conservative, clammed-up call for someone in Dooley’s situation. You can’t do that when arguably more than half of your own fan base wants you fired, anyway. You just can’t. " And, thanks for pointing out too that Bray threw the ball late to Zach Rogers on that OT play. It's time for a change at Tennessee.

  • Wes, you summed it up perfectly

  • Agree totally, keep Graham and PIttman because they've done an outstanding job as position coaches, if they'll stay. I've been on CDD's side and advocating to give him one more year.......but his game management at the end of regulation was the last straw for me! I'm done and willing to accept the 3-4 years further delay that a coaching change will likely produce. THIS HURTS TOO MUCH!! If Gruden will come (and I don't believe he will), pay him whatever he wants. If not, take your time Mr. Hart and choose wisely..........the empty seats in the stadium today should tell you this will be the single most important hiring decision you will ever make in your career and it will make or break it for you! • Hart seems to be the only person still on Dooley's sinking ship.

What makes you say that? Did you expect something to be announced during the postgame press conference?

IT should have been. I think that is now painfully obvious.

Hart wanted Dooley to succeed, as we all did, but I really doubt Hart is still on the Dooley bandwagon. He won't make anything public until everything is settled between Dooley and the staff, IMO.

  • That call at the end of regulation was a play to not lose the game. What this team and fanbase needed was a play to WIN the damn thing. That was a game that could have been put out of reach in the third quarter, if not sooner. But tepid play calling after that long Mizzou TD to make it a 21-14 game did neither the program nor this staff any favors.

I've never seen a college coach get fired immediately after a game. It's usually on the Monday following the game, and that's in part because of needing to settle on terms and other issues before making such an announcement public.

That was a statement purely based on my opinion. Until Hart removes Dooley, I will assume he is backing CDD.. I just don't see any other way to look at it. Again, JMO.

  • Good summary. Dooley couldn't afford to lose this game and he definitely couldn't afford to make one of the poorest decisions I've seen a coach make in a while

  • Great article Wes. Today's loss hurts a ton. It's time to make a change and all of the fans need to get behind whoever is our next coach.

  • Wes, it isn't just the calls and mistakes made by coaches and players in today's game. If it were, CDD's future would not be in question. It's the fact that, having control of the game, the miscues and mistakes in the second half simply highlighted those made this entire season.

What should have been a really good season by this team has evolved into one of near shame. From bad clock and game management to strange calls and questionable offensive and defensive schemes when a game has been in the balance to the failure to improve play on the defensive side, this game summarized it all.

I like Dooley. I think firing him will lead to several more years of poor team play and the loss of the better part of the offense to the pros at the end of the season. It will destroy recruiting. It will be very difficult to find the right replacement. But, I don't see it getting any better in the future.

There were so many questionable decisions and plays that we should wonder why, after a season of the same, we should expect it to be any different in future year unless there are changes made.

  • I don't care what the prevailing wisdom might be. You never play for overtime when you have a defense that couldn't hold water behind Norris Dam. You go for the win.

Let's see who gets to run the asylum next.

  • Ryan I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you here. I think given the empty seats that are becoming more and more at each game, the complete and total meltdown in every media associated with UT, and even former players coming out and calling for change, I think Mr. Hart needs to come out and acknowledge something. I don't seewhat there could possibly be for him to evaluate. Even the most possitive of Dooly supporters are now saying the time has come. Any one with a clue (not named Dooly) watched that game and spent alot of their time scratching their heads.

This is just my opinion, but imo I'm not sure how facts aren't pretty supportive of this line of thinking.
