  • A committee member on the NCAA selection show just said they acknowledged Tennessee did well down the stretch but said they did not really beat a lot of powerful teams during that stretch. (I guess Florida and Missouri don't count as "powerful" teams even though they made the tournament?)

He also said two other factors that went into Tennessee not getting chosen was that the Vols struggled on the road at times and also said being swept by Ole Miss was a factor in the selection committee's eyes. So I guess that makes 2 years in a row that Ole Miss kept us out of the tourney.

  • The lack of respect the SEC gets in basketball is astounding. Boise St., the fifth best team in Mountain West gets in? UT beats three tourny teams and lose extremely close games to Georgetown and Memphis. Bama destroyed Villanova (from the mighty Big East), yet nothing. The SEC is underrated as always.

I totally agree. When questioned on why MTSU got in over teams like Kensucky and Tennessee, he specifically cited their record on the road. Apparently, a team's record on the road had more value than strength of schedule in their eyes. I agree with Ryan that its a good thing but, in my humble opinion, they placed too high a premium on road wins versus the teams that were being beaten during those road wins.

MTSU beat Ole Miss and Vandy both at home. Despite huge losses to Florida and Belmont, that is why they got in.

I think it's easier for the Powers That Be to disrespect the SEC in basketball because our league owns football.

Yep. Nobody will admit it I suspect SEC football fatigue plays a role in this. There's a price for all those beat downs, chest beatings, Rammer Jammers and so forth.

If the SEC wants respects then the teams in the league should earn it. UT, UF and UK play good out of conference schedules. No one else does. The scheduling in this league is a joke. I know the league office has preached it but it is time for them do take action. Ole Miss schedule is embarrassingly bad. This becomes a huge problem for us because our conference wins get discounted as a result.

TN played Georgetown, Memphis, Virginia, Wichita St., Oklahoma St., Xavier......how is that bad?

While I have no problem with this in theory, the "major factor" seems to change every year. One year it's the last 10 games, the next it's SOS, one year it's almost all RPI, and the next it doesn't seem to matter that much, and on and on and on.

Yes, I know full well that teams that win take care of all of that in terms of in or out, but it's the same with seeding decisions, even if you're a perennial tourney team.

I'm sick and tired of all teams, not just us, having to try to hit an ever moving target.

Dober, it's no different than sorority rush. Bitches don't have to tell you why they don't want you in their club.

I don't have the time or inclination to look it up, but my instinct tells me they move the target around so they can accommodate their Most Favored Programs. We know who they are.

The NCAA could end this annual eastern elitist TV yell-a-thon tomorrow by expanding the field to include everyone. Would only add, what, two games to the tournament? But that would end ESPN's Winter Rush and Joe Lunardi would have to find a job.

Elites used to play a similar role in football. Much as we bitched about the BCS, it diluted the media bias toward the Big 10, Pac 10 and Notre Dame. And who burst through the BCS door but the redneck, maniac, inbred, mullet-headed SEC! They HATE that. Ain't happening in hoops, baby! No-sir-ree.

Want to know why the national sports media obsess over the Heisman Trophy? It's totally subjective, they can wear out microphones over it, and they can blackball anyone they want.

It is not bad. I never said it was. My post says UT, UF, and UK play good out of conference schedules. We are doing it right. Problem this year is we did not win enough of them.

You are correct, I missed the TN mention. My bad. However, after a little research, the best route is to schedule cupcakes and pad the record, like the Big East does. They get the most teams in (8) and outside of Louisville and Georgetown, they play no one out of conference. Pitt's schedule is particularly laughable.
