You can use them for whatever you want ultimately. But personally, I only use downvotes for someone who makes an egregious statement or personally attacks another member, player, coach, the university or a staff writer. I'm not going to downvote you just because I disagree with what you said as long as it was thought out and civil. I think most of the long time members are similar in my thinking. But this site is getting more and more members everyday and I think some of them have not caught on to how most use their votes.

You're free to use them however you want. There are really no set rules on it. But you only get up to five downvotes per day, so the idea is for you to use them only in rare instances. I think some people obviously use them when they disagree with a post, but I would recommend only using them for someone you believe is making an inflammatory, insulting or otherwise unproductive post.

It's OK for people to disagree on message boards. It probably wouldn't be any fun if we agreed all the time. But it doesn't add much to our site when people try to troll the board, insult others or something like that, so those types of posts, in my opinion, are much more worthy of a downvote.

I agree with Viking. I probably average 3-4 downvotes a month. Part of what makes message boards fun and entertaining are the discussions and debates. Therefore, I have an expectation that I will disagreements. I'm not going to downvote someone for having an opinion that differs from mine.

Agree. I'm not big on DV's but there have been a lot of dead horses beaten on this site lately so that may explain the DV's.
